Free online VCF to HTML converter

When a phone or contacts program exports an address book as .vcf, recipients without a compatible contacts application may need a browser-readable copy for review, printing, or archiving. Converting it to .html creates that copy while preserving the original for later contact import.

What the VCF format is

VCF usually means vCard, a structured contact format used by address books and defined by versions including vCard 2.1, 3.0, and 4.0. A vCard can contain FN for the formatted name, telephone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, organizations, notes, URLs, and an embedded photograph.

Phones, tablets, email clients, and contact-management programs create VCF files. Apple Contacts, Google Contacts, Microsoft Outlook, Android, Thunderbird, and business address-book systems can export them. One .vcf file may contain one contact or multiple records marked by BEGIN:VCARD and END:VCARD.

VCF can also mean Variant Call Format in genomics. That format contains genetic variant data and requires different software; the conversion described here applies only to vCard contact files.

What the HTML format is

HTML is the markup language used to structure web pages. A VCF conversion typically turns each contact into a heading, table, or labeled section that opens in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, or another browser.

HTML is suitable for viewing, printing, internal sharing, and human-readable archives. It is not a replacement for VCF when contacts must be imported into a phone or address book, because most contact applications cannot import an arbitrary HTML page as a contact database.

With a multi-contact file, the output generally places all records on one page or in a list. Keep the original VCF because the generated HTML normally cannot restore contacts to a device or address book.

Convert locally with contact software

For confidential address books, import the VCF into a desktop contact application that supports vCard, then use its HTML export or print option if available. Look for File → Import, followed by File → Export or Print → Save as HTML. Menu names and HTML support vary; Outlook and Thunderbird can handle vCard data but should not be assumed to provide the same standalone HTML export on every version.

Quality and compatibility checks

• Inspect names, accented characters, line breaks, phone labels, and multiple email addresses after conversion. VCard versions and character encoding can affect non-ASCII text.
• Photos, cryptographic keys, categories, custom vendor fields, contact groups, and synchronization metadata may be omitted or displayed differently because HTML has no standard equivalent for every vCard property.
• HTML is usually static. Changing a phone number in the browser does not modify the source VCF or synchronize the change with a device.
• Verify that contact values are displayed as text rather than interpreted as page markup, especially when notes or URLs contain special characters.
• VCF files may contain private addresses, phone numbers, notes, and photographs. Use a local workflow for sensitive data when possible, and remove the generated HTML file after sharing if it is no longer needed.
