Convert VCF to NBU

Users need this conversion when contacts stored as VCF must be restored to an older Nokia phone through Nokia PC Suite or Nokia Suite. NBU is a Nokia backup container, so creating a valid file normally requires the target phone and compatible Nokia software rather than an online file converter.

What the VCF format is

VCF, also called vCard, is a text-based exchange format for one or more contact records. A file can contain names, telephone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, organizations, notes, birthdays, photos, and group information.

Microsoft Outlook, Windows Contacts, Apple Contacts, Google Contacts, Thunderbird, Android and iOS export tools, and mobile-phone applications can create VCF files. VCF is intended for moving or sharing contacts between address books; it is not a Nokia backup format.

What the NBU format is

NBU is the proprietary Nokia Backup format created by Nokia PC Suite and Nokia Suite. Depending on the phone, software version, and selected backup categories, it can store contacts along with messages, calendar entries, notes, bookmarks, settings, and other phone data.

Its main advantage is device-oriented restoration through compatible Nokia software. Unlike VCF, NBU is not a portable contact-exchange format, and it is generally unsuitable for editing or importing into modern address-book applications.

How to create an NBU from VCF contacts

1. Keep an untouched copy of the original contacts.vcf. For a multi-contact file, verify that records use BEGIN:VCARD and END:VCARD lines.
2. Use a compatible Windows installation of Nokia PC Suite or Nokia Suite. These discontinued applications and their phone drivers may not work on current Windows versions; an older supported computer or virtual machine may be required.
3. Import the VCF into a contact manager that the Nokia software can synchronize, such as Microsoft Outlook or Windows Contacts. If the Nokia application provides a vCard import command, use that instead. Menu names vary by Nokia software version.
4. Connect the Nokia phone by USB, Bluetooth, or infrared if the model supports the connection, then synchronize the imported contacts to the phone. Follow the software’s contact-synchronization settings to avoid overwriting existing address-book data.
5. Open several contacts on the phone and check names, international telephone numbers, email addresses, groups, accented characters, and photos.
6. In Nokia PC Suite or Nokia Suite, open the backup function, choose a custom backup if available, select contacts or the required categories, and start the backup. Save the generated file with its original .nbu extension.

If direct synchronization is unavailable, some Nokia models can receive a VCF through Bluetooth or as a message attachment; opening the received file imports the contact or contacts. This method depends on the phone firmware and is less suitable for a large address book.

Compatibility and data limitations

No generally reliable online service converts VCF directly into a functional NBU. Online VCF tools can expose names, phone numbers, and other personal data, while an NBU also requires Nokia-specific backup structure. Use local software for this operation; do not rename .vcf to .nbu.

Contact import can discard fields unsupported by the Nokia address book, including custom vCard properties, multiple field labels, social-profile data, groups, photos, and some vCard 3.0 or 4.0 features. Character encoding, line wrapping, duplicate records, and telephone-number formatting may also change.

An NBU may restore only to the same or a closely related Nokia model and may require a matching or compatible PC Suite/Nokia Suite version. Keep the original VCF as the portable master copy and treat the NBU as a device-specific restore file.
