Speech in an M4A recording must be transcribed when a word processor, captioning workflow, archive, or search system requires readable text. This is speech recognition rather than a direct file-format change, because M4A contains encoded audio and TEXT contains characters.

What the M4A format is

M4A is an MPEG-4 audio container that commonly stores AAC-compressed audio, although it can also contain lossless ALAC audio. iPhones, Apple Voice Memos, QuickTime, GarageBand, iTunes, and many recording applications create M4A files. The format is used for voice notes, interviews, meetings, lectures, podcasts, and music.

An M4A file contains sound data, not written characters. Renaming recording.m4a to recording.txt cannot create a transcript; speech-recognition software must analyze the audio first. Music or recordings without intelligible speech will not produce a useful text result.

What the TEXT format is

A TEXT file normally means a plain-text file with a .txt extension. It stores characters, punctuation, and line breaks without audio, images, fonts, or page layout. UTF-8 is the safest encoding for accented characters and non-Latin scripts.

Plain text can be searched and edited in Notepad, TextEdit, or code editors, and imported into scripts, databases, and archival systems. It does not preserve a speaker's voice, tone, background sound, formatting, or exact timing unless the transcription includes timestamps.

Using Whisper locally

OpenAI Whisper can transcribe M4A files locally. Install Python, the Whisper package, and FFmpeg; FFmpeg must be available as a system command because Whisper uses it to decode audio.

The command writes a plain-text transcript in the transcript directory. Smaller models use less memory and finish sooner; larger models generally perform better with accents, noise, and difficult speech but require more processing resources. Remove --language en to let Whisper detect the language automatically.

If FFmpeg cannot decode the source or the recording needs standardization, create a mono, 16 kHz PCM WAV file:

Quality and compatibility limits

Accuracy depends on microphone quality, background noise, speech speed, accents, jargon, names, and overlapping speakers. AAC compression usually remains adequate for speech, but muffled, clipped, distant, or heavily compressed audio can cause missing or incorrect words.

Plain .txt output may contain no speaker labels, timestamps, confidence scores, or formatting. Use a transcription output that supports timestamps or speaker separation when preparing captions, meeting records, or audit material; use UTF-8 plain text when maximum compatibility is the priority. Speaker labels and timestamps should be treated as estimates unless verified by a person.
