Free online M4A to DOCX converter

A voice memo, interview, meeting, or lecture in M4A must be transcribed before it can be edited, searched, or shared as a Word document. The conversion produces written content in DOCX; changing the file extension alone does not convert audio into text.

What the M4A format is

M4A is an MPEG-4 audio container that commonly stores AAC-compressed audio and, less often, lossless ALAC audio. iPhone and iPad Voice Memos, QuickTime, GarageBand, conferencing tools, podcast software, and messaging apps can create M4A files.

An M4A contains sound, not paragraphs or a transcript. A conventional file converter cannot determine the spoken words; automatic speech-recognition software must analyze the recording first.

What the DOCX format is

DOCX is Microsoft Word's Office Open XML document format. It stores editable paragraphs, headings, tables, comments, metadata, and layout in a ZIP-based package.

A DOCX transcript can be corrected in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice, searched, annotated, printed, and shared independently of the recording application. It can contain speaker labels, timestamps, headings, and a link to the source audio, but the M4A is not included unless you insert it separately.

How to convert M4A into DOCX

Use Microsoft Word for the web

Word for the web has a Transcribe feature in supported Microsoft 365 accounts:

1. Open Word for the web, create a blank document, and select Home → Dictate → Transcribe.
2. Select Upload audio and choose the .m4a file.
3. Choose the spoken language and wait for upload and transcription to finish.
4. Review the text, speaker assignments, and timestamps. Select Add all to document, or insert only chosen transcript sections.
5. Save the result with File → Save as → Download a copy, producing a .docx file.

Transcription availability, supported languages, audio-duration limits, and monthly quotas depend on the Microsoft 365 account, region, and current service policy. This upload workflow is primarily provided in Word for the web; the desktop Word application may not offer the same feature.

Transcribe locally with Whisper

Desktop applications built around Whisper, including MacWhisper for macOS and Buzz for Windows or Linux, can process M4A locally. Import the recording, select its language, run transcription, and export DOCX when the application provides that option. If it exports only text or subtitles, open the result in Word or LibreOffice and use File → Save as to create .docx.

A command-line Whisper installation can create a text intermediate file:

whisper recording.m4a --model medium --language English --output_format txt

Open recording.txt in Word, add headings and speaker information, then select File → Save as → Word Document (*.docx). The command requires an installed Whisper implementation and its dependencies, including FFmpeg in many setups. Larger models can improve recognition but need more memory and processing time.

Use an online transcription service

Happy Scribe, Sonix, and Trint accept M4A uploads and provide editable transcripts with DOCX export on supported plans. The usual process is Upload → choose language → Transcribe → review → Export → DOCX. Check current file limits and export requirements before starting, because DOCX export may require a paid plan.

Do not upload confidential interviews, medical recordings, legal material, or unreleased content without checking the provider's retention, deletion, encryption, regional-processing, and data-training policies. Local Whisper software avoids sending the audio to that service, although the computer still stores the source and generated transcript.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Recognition accuracy varies with microphone quality, background noise, compression, accents, speaking speed, technical vocabulary, and overlapping speakers. Check names, numbers, punctuation, quotations, and speaker labels manually; automatic speaker identification can assign text to the wrong person.

Use the original M4A rather than a re-encoded copy. Converting AAC audio to another lossy format can discard detail without improving recognition. Split long recordings only when a tool imposes duration or size limits, and retain the original M4A alongside the DOCX transcript.

DOCX preserves the recognized words and document formatting, not the acoustic information needed to verify every statement. Keep timestamps or link the source recording when the transcript may be used for legal, medical, research, or editorial work.
