Devices and recording programs often save spoken audio inside MOV video files, while word processors require DOCX for editing, review, and archiving. The conversion therefore means transcribing the speech in the MOV and saving the transcript in a DOCX document; it is not a direct media-container change.

What the MOV format is

MOV is an Apple QuickTime container that can hold video, audio, subtitles, timecode, and metadata. iPhones, iPads, QuickTime Player, Final Cut Pro, screen-recording tools, and many cameras create MOV files. The audio may use AAC, PCM, or another codec, and the file may contain video that is irrelevant to transcription.

What the DOCX format is

DOCX is the XML-based document format used by Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs import/export, and most business-document systems. It stores editable paragraphs, headings, tables, comments, and document metadata, making it suitable for meeting transcripts, interviews, captions converted to prose, and searchable archives.

DOCX does not normally store playable audio or perform speech recognition. The resulting file contains the recognized speech, with optional timestamps, speaker labels, and notes.

How to actually convert MOV to DOCX

A local workflow keeps the recording on your computer and gives you control over the recognition model. Install FFmpeg and Whisper, then extract a speech-friendly WAV file:

The options remove video, convert to mono, set a 16 kHz sample rate, and save uncompressed PCM audio. Transcribe it with Whisper:

Replace en with the recording language, or omit --language for automatic detection. The command creates a plain transcript, usually named audio.txt. Open it in Word or LibreOffice Writer, apply headings and paragraph breaks, then choose File → Save As and select Word 2007–365 (*.docx).

For timestamps, request an SRT output instead:

Copy the timestamped segments into Writer, or use them as a reference while formatting the DOCX. Whisper model sizes trade speed and memory use against recognition accuracy; larger models generally require more processing resources.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• Speech recognition accuracy depends on microphone quality, background noise, overlapping speakers, accents, specialized vocabulary, and language selection. Names, numbers, and technical terms require manual checking.
• A MOV containing only music, effects, or silence cannot produce a meaningful transcript. Video frames are ignored unless a separate OCR or visual-analysis step is used.
• Converting to DOCX does not preserve the original audio as playable content. Keep the source MOV alongside the transcript when legal, editorial, or audit records require the recording.
• Automatic speaker identification is not guaranteed. Add labels such as Speaker 1 and Speaker 2 during review if the transcription tool does not identify speakers reliably.
• Long recordings may be easier to process after splitting them into sections, but retain the original order and verify that no words are lost at split points.
