What the MOV format is

MOV is a multimedia container developed by Apple for QuickTime. It can store video, audio, subtitles, timecode, and metadata, commonly using codecs such as H.264, HEVC, AAC, or Apple ProRes.

You encounter MOV files from iPhones, macOS screen recordings, QuickTime Player, digital cameras, video-editing applications, and meeting or recording software. A MOV file may contain several audio tracks or no speech at all; only an audio track with recognizable speech can produce a useful transcript.

What the RTF format is

RTF, or Rich Text Format, is a document format supported by Microsoft Word, WordPad, LibreOffice Writer, TextEdit, and many document-management systems. It stores text formatting such as fonts, sizes, bold and italic styles, paragraphs, and basic alignment in a plain-text-based structure.

RTF is useful for transcripts because it remains editable and portable without requiring the original recording application. It is not an audio format and cannot preserve the MOV’s video, original sound, speaker identity, or vocal tone unless the transcription tool adds that information as text.

How to actually convert MOV to RTF

Use the built-in online converter

1. Open 101convert.com and select the MOV-to-RTF conversion tool.
2. Upload the MOV file. If the file contains multiple audio tracks, select the track containing the conversation when the tool offers that option.
3. Choose RTF as the output format and start the conversion. The service extracts speech from the recording, transcribes it, and places the transcript in an RTF document.
4. Download the resulting .rtf file and open it in Word, LibreOffice Writer, or another RTF-compatible editor.
5. Review names, numbers, technical terms, punctuation, and speaker changes before treating the transcript as a final record.

The online method requires no installed software and is suitable when the required result is an editable transcript rather than a copy of the original media.

Use a desktop workflow

For sensitive recordings or batch processing, extract the audio locally with FFmpeg:

-vn discards video, while -ac 1 creates mono audio and -ar 16000 sets a speech-recognition-friendly sample rate. Run the WAV file through a locally installed speech-recognition tool, export the transcript as DOCX or plain text, then open it in LibreOffice Writer and use File → Save As to select Rich Text Format (.rtf).

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• The RTF file contains recognized speech, not the original audio or video. Keep the MOV if the recording may need verification.
• Accuracy decreases with background music, echo, clipping, overlapping speakers, distant microphones, heavy accents, and specialized vocabulary.
• Automatic transcription may omit pauses, laughter, nonverbal sounds, or unintelligible sections unless the converter marks them explicitly.
• Speaker labels, timestamps, and paragraph breaks depend on the transcription tool; basic RTF export does not create them automatically.
• Long or high-resolution MOV files may take longer to process and may exceed upload limits. Extracting audio first can reduce processing size, but it does not improve unclear speech.
• RTF supports basic formatting consistently, but advanced Word features, embedded media, comments, and complex tables may not survive export.
