What the 3GP format is
3GP is a container defined for 3G mobile devices and commonly used for phone videos, MMS media, and voice recordings. Its audio stream may use AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AAC, or another codec, while the container can also include a video stream. Phones, older mobile cameras, messaging applications, and recording apps commonly create .3gp files.
For audio-to-text conversion, only the speech-bearing audio stream matters. Any video in the file is normally discarded during transcription.
What the RTF format is
RTF, or Rich Text Format, stores formatted text with encoding, fonts, paragraphs, lists, and basic character styling. Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, WordPad, and many other word processors can open .rtf files.
RTF is suitable for transcripts that need editable paragraphs and broad desktop compatibility. It does not contain the original audio, speaker recognition data, timestamps, or proof that a sentence was transcribed correctly unless those details are inserted into the document.
How to actually convert 3GP to RTF
Using the online converter
- Open the free converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the
.3gprecording. - Choose the audio-to-text or transcription function, select the spoken language, and choose RTF as the output format when that option is shown.
- Start the conversion and download the generated
.rtffile. - Open the result in Word or LibreOffice Writer and correct names, punctuation, technical terms, and speaker changes.
Use a clear language selection and upload the original recording rather than a re-encoded copy. Processing may take longer for large files or recordings containing video.
Using desktop tools
For a local workflow, extract the audio with FFmpeg, transcribe it with a speech-recognition program such as Whisper, and save the transcript from a word processor as RTF.
- Extract mono, 16 kHz PCM audio, a commonly supported input for speech recognition:
ffmpeg -i input.3gp -vn -ac 1 -ar 16000 -c:a pcm_s16le audio.wav
- Run a local Whisper installation. For example:
whisper audio.wav --language en --output_format txt --output_dir transcript
Replace en with the recording's language code, or omit the language option for automatic detection. Larger Whisper models generally improve recognition but require more processing time and memory.
- Open the generated
audio.txtfile in LibreOffice Writer, apply any required formatting, then choose File → Save As, selectRich Text Format (.rtf), and save.
Quality and compatibility limitations
Transcription accuracy depends on microphone quality, background noise, compression, overlapping speakers, accents, and the selected language. AMR speech recordings can lose consonant detail through heavy compression, so review the RTF output against the audio before using it as an official record.
A direct media conversion cannot create meaningful RTF content because 3GP contains encoded audio and RTF contains document markup. If a tool only changes the extension or extracts binary data without speech recognition, it has not produced a transcript.
Names, numbers, abbreviations, and punctuation require manual checking. If timestamps or speaker labels are needed, generate them during transcription and retain them as formatted paragraphs in the RTF document.
