What the 3GP format is

3GP is a multimedia container defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project for mobile phones and 3G networks. A file with this extension may contain an audio track, commonly AMR-NB, AMR-WB, or AAC, and may also contain video encoded with H.263, H.264, or MPEG-4. Older phones, MMS systems, mobile camera applications, and recording apps commonly create 3GP files.

VLC, FFmpeg, QuickTime-based players, and some mobile-media applications can open 3GP. For audio-to-text work, only the speech-bearing audio stream is needed; any video stream can be discarded during extraction.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format designed to preserve text, fonts, page breaks, images, and metadata across operating systems. A transcript saved as PDF can be searched, printed, emailed, signed, and archived without requiring the original recording software.

PDF is not an audio-transcription format. A PDF made from a 3GP in the audio-to-text context should contain recognized speech, optionally with timestamps, speaker labels, and the recording filename. Embedding the original 3GP as an attachment is possible in some PDF tools, but it does not create a transcript and media playback support varies.

How to convert 3GP to PDF

Use the built-in online converter

On 101convert.com, you can convert the file for free without installing software:

1. Open the 3GP-to-PDF converter and upload the .3gp recording.
2. Choose PDF as the output format and select the audio-to-text or transcription option if the converter displays one.
3. Set the spoken language when prompted. Automatic language detection can reduce accuracy for short recordings or mixed-language speech.
4. Start the conversion and download the generated PDF after processing finishes.

The resulting PDF is useful only if speech recognition is included. A basic media-container conversion may instead place the 3GP file inside a PDF or produce a document containing file information; that output is not a transcript.

Use an offline workflow with FFmpeg and a transcription tool

For recordings containing confidential speech, extract the audio locally before transcribing it:

ffmpeg -i input.3gp -vn -ac 1 -ar 16000 audio.wav

-vn removes video, -ac 1 creates mono audio, and -ar 16000 sets a speech-recognition-friendly sample rate. FFmpeg decodes common AMR and AAC tracks; if the file contains an unsupported or damaged stream, its diagnostic output identifies the problem.

With an installed Whisper command-line implementation, transcribe the extracted audio:

Choose a smaller model for faster processing or a larger model for potentially better recognition on difficult audio. Then create the PDF with LibreOffice:

libreoffice --headless --convert-to pdf --outdir output audio.txt

For better pagination and headings, place the transcript in a word-processing document first, then use File → Export as PDF. Preserve the original 3GP separately if the transcript must be checked against the recording.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Transcription accuracy depends on microphone quality, background noise, compression artifacts, overlapping speakers, accents, and the selected language model. AMR audio from older phones may contain less speech detail than WAV or AAC, so punctuation, names, and numbers should be reviewed manually.

Keep timestamps or speaker labels only when the transcription tool generates them; converting plain text to PDF cannot reconstruct this information. A searchable PDF requires real text objects, not screenshots of transcript pages. Passwords, encryption, and embedded audio can reduce compatibility with browser viewers and document-management systems.
