A PDF is useful when an MKV recording must be shared as a searchable transcript, submitted as a document, or archived without requiring a media player. Because MKV is a multimedia container and PDF is a document format, the practical conversion extracts subtitles or transcribes the audio before creating the PDF.

What the MKV format is

MKV, or Matroska Video, is an open container that can hold video, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, attachments, and metadata in one file. It is commonly produced by OBS Studio, screen-recording programs, video editors, FFmpeg, HandBrake, cameras, and download or remux tools.

In an audio-to-text workflow, the useful content is usually an embedded subtitle track or the spoken audio. An MKV file may contain neither, so a PDF conversion cannot always extract ready-made text.

What the PDF format is

PDF preserves page layout, fonts, images, and pagination across operating systems and devices. It is suitable for transcripts, meeting records, captions, interview archives, subtitles, and printed documentation because recipients do not need the original MKV player or media codecs.

A PDF does not normally retain playable MKV audio or video. The resulting document contains extracted subtitles, a speech transcript, screenshots, or a combination of these elements.

How to convert MKV to PDF

Use an existing subtitle track

  1. Inspect the container with ffprobe -hide_banner input.mkv and look for streams marked Subtitle.
  2. Extract the first subtitle stream with ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:s:0 subtitles.srt. Change 0:s:0 if the required language is another subtitle stream.
  3. Open subtitles.srt in a subtitle editor or word processor and remove timecodes if a plain transcript is required. Keep them if the PDF is intended as a captioned record.
  4. Open the cleaned file in LibreOffice Writer, format headings and speaker labels, then select File → Export as PDF.

Transcribe spoken audio when no subtitles exist

  1. Extract a speech-friendly audio file with ffmpeg -i input.mkv -vn -ac 1 -ar 16000 audio.wav. The -vn option removes video, while mono 16 kHz audio reduces processing requirements for speech recognition.
  2. Run a local Whisper installation, for example whisper audio.wav --model medium --output_format txt. Choose a larger model for better accuracy when the recording has accents, background noise, or overlapping speakers; processing time and memory use increase with model size.
  3. Proofread the generated transcript, correct names and technical terms, add speaker labels and optional timestamps, then paste it into LibreOffice Writer.
  4. Export the finished document through File → Export as PDF. For a searchable PDF, keep the transcript as selectable text rather than exporting page images.

Use the online converter

You can use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the MKV file, select PDF as the output, start the conversion, and download the generated document. If the file has no embedded subtitles, the service must transcribe its audio; review the output because automatic speech recognition can misidentify names, punctuation, and overlapping speech.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

There is no universal one-step media-to-document conversion: the result depends on whether the MKV contains subtitles and how clearly its audio can be transcribed. Multiple audio or subtitle tracks require explicit stream selection, and unsupported subtitle codecs may need conversion in a media tool before extraction.

Automatic transcripts should be checked against the recording, especially for proper names, numbers, timestamps, technical vocabulary, and speakers talking simultaneously. A transcript with timestamps is usually longer and less visually compact than a cleaned reading copy.

Large recordings may exceed upload limits or take considerable time to transcribe. For confidential recordings, local FFmpeg and Whisper processing avoids sending the MKV to a third-party server. PDF files containing only scanned transcript images are not searchable unless OCR is applied; exporting actual text preserves search and copy functions.
