Audio recordings often need to be submitted, shared, or archived as searchable documents rather than playable media. Converting AAC to PDF therefore means transcribing the speech and placing the resulting text into a PDF; it is not a direct codec conversion.

What the AAC format is

AAC, or Advanced Audio Coding, is a lossy compressed audio format used for voice recordings, podcasts, music, video soundtracks, and smartphone recordings. Apple Music, iTunes, QuickTime, Android devices, screen-recording applications, and many digital recorders create or export .aac, .m4a, or AAC audio streams. An AAC file contains encoded sound, not selectable words, so a PDF converter must first use speech recognition or manual transcription.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a page-description format designed to preserve text layout, fonts, images, and pagination across operating systems. A transcript saved as PDF can be printed, searched, annotated, emailed, and archived without requiring the original audio application. A PDF normally contains the transcription rather than the AAC sound; embedding playable audio is possible in some PDF workflows but is not a substitute for converting speech to text.

How to convert AAC to PDF

Use 101convert.com without installing software

  1. Open the AAC-to-PDF conversion page on 101convert.com and select the AAC file.
  2. Start the conversion and wait for speech recognition to produce a transcript.
  3. Download the generated PDF and check names, numbers, punctuation, and speaker changes against the recording.

This method is suitable when the recording is non-confidential and you need a document without installing transcription or document software. Recognition quality depends on the language selected, audio clarity, background noise, accents, and overlapping speakers.

Use Whisper and LibreOffice locally

  1. Install FFmpeg and Whisper. FFmpeg supplies audio decoding; Whisper performs speech recognition.
  2. If Whisper cannot read the AAC container, create a speech-friendly WAV file with ffmpeg -i recording.aac -ar 16000 -ac 1 recording.wav.
  3. Transcribe the recording with whisper recording.wav --model medium --language en --output_format txt --output_dir transcript. Replace en with the recording language and choose a larger model when accuracy matters more than processing time.
  4. Open the resulting .txt file in LibreOffice Writer, correct the transcript, and add a title, recording date, speaker labels, and timestamps where required.
  5. Choose File → Export as PDF, or save the document as transcript.odt and run libreoffice --headless --convert-to pdf transcript.odt.

Local processing keeps the AAC file on your computer. Whisper can also create .srt or .vtt subtitle output, but those files need additional formatting before they become a readable PDF transcript.

Quality and compatibility limitations

AAC is usually lossy, so compression artifacts can reduce recognition accuracy, especially with quiet speech or strong background noise. Transcription software may confuse homophones, technical terms, names, numbers, and multiple speakers; review the PDF against the audio before using it as an official record.

Choose a language explicitly, preserve the original AAC file, and use a higher Whisper model when processing time and memory allow. A PDF containing real text remains searchable and selectable; a PDF made from screenshots or scanned transcript pages requires OCR and is less accessible. Online processing may expose confidential recordings to a third party, making local Whisper transcription preferable for medical, legal, business, or personal material.
