What the AAC format is

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is a lossy audio codec used for music, podcasts, voice recordings, streaming, and mobile audio. An AAC stream may use the .aac extension, or it may be stored inside an .m4a or .mp4 container. Smartphones, media players, messaging apps, and audio-editing software commonly create or play AAC audio.

What the TXT format is

TXT is plain text containing characters without audio, images, page layout, or application-specific formatting. A transcript saved as .txt can be opened with Notepad, TextEdit, LibreOffice, code editors, indexing tools, and database import utilities.

TXT makes spoken content easy to search, copy, edit, archive, and process. Use UTF-8 encoding when the transcript contains accented characters, non-Latin scripts, or symbols. TXT normally does not preserve speaker labels, timestamps, confidence scores, or synchronized captions.

Using Whisper locally

OpenAI Whisper and compatible implementations can transcribe AAC locally. Install FFmpeg so the transcription software can decode AAC and common containers, then install Whisper:

Replace recording.aac with the actual filename and change en to the spoken language code. The command writes a text transcript to the transcripts directory. Smaller models need less processing time and memory; larger models generally improve recognition but require more resources. For AAC audio inside an M4A file, provide the M4A filename instead.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Accuracy depends on background noise, microphone distance, room acoustics, speaker accents, overlapping voices, speech speed, and the selected language.
• Low-bitrate AAC compression can remove speech detail, but a clear recording is often suitable for transcription.
• Music, silence, applause, and other non-speech sounds may be omitted or incorrectly interpreted. A recording without intelligible speech cannot produce a useful transcript.
• Automatic transcription can misrecognize names, numbers, abbreviations, punctuation, and specialized vocabulary; proofreading is required for reliable records.
• TXT does not retain the original audio or provide synchronized timing. Use subtitle or structured transcript formats when timestamps, speaker turns, or caption synchronization are required.
• Local Whisper processing keeps confidential audio on the computer, but it requires installation, model storage, FFmpeg, and sufficient processing capacity.
