What the AMR format is
AMR, or Adaptive Multi-Rate, is a speech-focused audio format used mainly for mobile voice recordings, voicemail, and older 3G telephony systems. Files commonly use the .amr extension and contain AMR-NB or AMR-WB audio, optimized for spoken voice at low bit rates rather than music.
Mobile voice-recording applications, call-recording systems, messaging applications, and telecommunications equipment can create AMR files. Desktop media players may not support them without an audio codec, but FFmpeg and VLC can usually decode them.
What the PDF format is
PDF is a page-layout document format designed to preserve text, images, fonts, and page dimensions across operating systems. A PDF transcript is suitable for printing, emailing, document management, legal or administrative records, and long-term reference.
PDF does not automatically represent the spoken content of an AMR recording. A PDF can contain an attached or embedded audio file in some software, but support for playing embedded audio varies by reader. For searchable, editable, and printable output, the AMR must first be transcribed.
How to convert AMR to PDF
Use the online converter
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the .amr file, select PDF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. If the service offers speech recognition, review the generated transcript before downloading because names, numbers, accents, background noise, and overlapping speakers can produce errors.
A format-only conversion cannot create words from audio. If the resulting PDF contains an audio attachment or a placeholder instead of a transcript, use the local workflow below.
Convert and transcribe locally
- Install FFmpeg and convert the AMR recording to a widely supported WAV file:
The command creates 16-bit, mono, 16 kHz PCM audio, a suitable input for many speech-recognition systems.ffmpeg -i input.amr -ar 16000 -ac 1 -c:a pcm_s16le input.wav - Transcribe the WAV file with a speech-to-text engine such as Whisper:
Replacewhisper input.wav --model medium --language en --output_format txtenwith the recording language. Use a larger model for better accuracy if the computer has enough memory; use a smaller model for faster processing. - Open the generated
input.txtin LibreOffice Writer, correct names, punctuation, timestamps, and speaker labels, then choose File → Export as PDF. Save the result asinput.pdf.
For a transcript with headings and speaker identification, paste the recognized text into a document first and apply paragraph styles before exporting. Keep the original .amr file with the PDF when the recording may need to be verified later.
Quality and compatibility limitations
AMR is lossy and often recorded at a low bit rate, so conversion to WAV or PDF cannot restore unclear speech. Transcription accuracy depends on recording level, background noise, microphone distance, language, vocabulary, and whether multiple people speak simultaneously.
Changing AMR to WAV only changes the audio container and sample representation; it does not improve the recording. Do not use a higher sample rate as a quality enhancement. Proofread dates, telephone numbers, names, addresses, and technical terms against the audio.
Keep confidential recordings off third-party processing systems unless their privacy and retention terms meet your requirements. A PDF containing only the transcript is searchable; a PDF that merely embeds AMR audio may not be searchable and may fail to play in many PDF viewers.
