An AMR recording has to be transcribed before it can become a DOC document, because AMR stores compressed speech rather than characters. This is useful when a phone voice memo must be edited, shared as a Word document, or archived with searchable content.

What the AMR format is

AMR, or Adaptive Multi-Rate, is a speech-audio format designed for efficient voice storage and transmission on mobile networks. AMR-NB commonly stores narrowband speech at 8 kHz, while AMR-WB stores wider-band speech at higher sampling rates.

Older mobile phones, cellular voicemail systems, Android voice-recording applications, and telecommunications software may create .amr files. The format contains sound data only; it does not contain a written transcript, so changing the filename extension or placing the audio in a DOC container cannot produce readable words.

What the DOC format is

DOC is Microsoft Word's legacy binary document format. It stores editable paragraphs, formatting, tables, headers, and other word-processing content, making it suitable for a transcript that must be corrected, printed, annotated, or indexed.

DOC is supported by Microsoft Word and LibreOffice Writer, but DOCX is the newer and generally safer Word format. Use DOC when a receiving system specifically requires .doc; otherwise, DOCX usually provides better compatibility and smaller files.

How to actually convert AMR to DOC

This conversion has two stages: speech recognition creates text from the audio, and a word processor saves that text as DOC.

Use the online converter

  1. Open 101convert.com and choose the AMR-to-DOC conversion in the Audio to text category.
  2. Upload the .amr file and select the spoken language if the converter offers a language setting. Correct language selection improves recognition of vocabulary and punctuation.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .doc file when processing finishes.
  4. Open the document in Word or LibreOffice Writer and check names, numbers, punctuation, and unclear passages against the recording.

For recordings containing confidential speech, use a local workflow instead of uploading the file.

Use FFmpeg and Whisper locally

  1. Install FFmpeg and OpenAI Whisper, then convert AMR to a standard WAV input with:

ffmpeg -i input.amr -ar 16000 -ac 1 speech.wav

The sample rate and mono channel are suitable for speech recognition; FFmpeg decodes both AMR-NB and AMR-WB when the installed build includes the required codecs.

Run Whisper with the language specified when known:

whisper speech.wav --model medium --language en --output_format txt

Replace en with the appropriate language code, or omit --language for automatic language detection. Smaller models process faster, while larger models generally recognize difficult speech more accurately and require more memory.

  1. Open the generated speech.txt file in LibreOffice Writer.
  2. Apply headings, paragraphs, speaker labels, or timestamps as needed.
  3. Choose File → Save As, select Word 97–2003 (*.doc) as the file type, and save the transcript.

Microsoft Word can perform the final save instead: open the transcript, choose File → Save As, select Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc), and confirm the legacy-format warning.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Recognition quality depends on microphone quality, background noise, overlapping speakers, accents, recording volume, and the AMR bitrate. AMR compression can remove consonant detail, so a converted document may require manual correction even when the audio sounds understandable.

Speech recognition does not reliably infer speaker identity, punctuation, technical terms, or confidential names. Review the complete transcript instead of treating it as a verbatim record, especially for legal, medical, financial, or safety-related material.

Converting AMR to WAV changes the audio container and encoding but does not improve the original recording. Saving the recognized output as DOC changes the document format but does not preserve the audio unless you attach the AMR file separately or insert it as an object.
