An OPUS recording must be transcribed before it can become a DOC document. This conversion is useful when a voice message, meeting recording, interview, or lecture needs an editable transcript for Word-based editing, sharing, or archiving.

What the OPUS format is

OPUS is a compressed audio format designed for speech and music, with good voice quality at relatively small file sizes. Web browsers, VoIP applications, recording tools, and messaging apps such as WhatsApp commonly create or use .opus files. An OPUS file contains sound, not written characters, so changing its filename extension cannot produce a transcript.

What the DOC format is

DOC is Microsoft Word’s older editable document format. It stores formatted paragraphs, headings, tables, and other document content, making it suitable for editing and distributing a transcript in older Word installations. Newer Word versions normally use DOCX, but DOC remains useful when a recipient or document-management system specifically requires the legacy format.

How to convert OPUS to DOC

Use the built-in online converter

  1. Open the OPUS-to-DOC converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .opus recording.
  3. Select DOC as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Review the generated transcript, then download the DOC file.

This process combines speech recognition with document generation; it is not a simple audio-container change. Recognition quality depends on recording clarity, language selection, background noise, overlapping speakers, and terminology.

Use desktop software for a local workflow

  1. Transcribe the audio with a speech-recognition application such as Whisper. A command-line installation may use whisper recording.opus --language en --output_format txt; select the actual spoken language instead of en when necessary.
  2. Open the resulting transcript in LibreOffice Writer or Microsoft Word and correct names, punctuation, speaker labels, and timestamps.
  3. In LibreOffice, choose File → Save As, select Word 97–2003 (.doc), and save the document. In Word, choose File → Save As and select the DOC format.

Whisper can also produce subtitle or timestamp files, but those require cleanup before placing them in a readable DOC transcript. Pandoc can convert plain text or structured markup to DOCX; LibreOffice can then save the result as legacy DOC.

Quality and compatibility limits

Automatic transcription can mishear words, punctuation, abbreviations, and speaker changes. Listen to the OPUS file while proofreading, especially for names, numbers, medical or legal terminology, and low-volume speech. DOC has less consistent support than DOCX in modern software, so use DOC only when compatibility with an older system is required. Audio files containing confidential recordings should be processed locally unless the uploader has permission to send them to an online service.
