What the AAC format is
AAC, or Advanced Audio Coding, is a lossy audio format designed to reduce file size while retaining useful listening quality. Phones, voice-recording applications, messaging platforms, music services, Apple software, and many cameras can create or export .aac files; AAC audio is also commonly stored inside .m4a or .mp4 containers.
An AAC file contains sound data, not a document structure or written transcript. Speech-recognition software must analyze the recording and generate words before the result can be saved as DOC. Music, background noise, overlapping speakers, heavy accents, and unclear recordings can produce inaccurate output.
What the DOC format is
DOC is the legacy Microsoft Word document format associated primarily with Microsoft Word versions before DOCX became standard. It supports editable paragraphs, headings, tables, page formatting, and basic document metadata, making it suitable for transcripts that need correction, annotation, printing, or distribution to software that specifically requests .doc.
DOC is less interoperable and less storage-efficient than DOCX, but older word processors and document-management systems may require it. A transcript saved as DOC contains recognized words and formatting; it does not preserve the original AAC audio unless the audio is embedded separately.
How to actually convert AAC to DOC
The practical process is speech transcription followed by DOC export. On 101convert.com, you can convert the file for free without installing software:
- Open the AAC-to-DOC converter on 101convert.com.
- Select the source file, such as
interview.aac. If the recording uses an.m4aor.mp4container, select that file instead. - Choose the spoken language and any available speaker-label, timestamp, or punctuation options. Correct language selection improves recognition accuracy.
- Start the conversion and wait for the audio to be transcribed.
- Download the generated
.docfile, open it in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer, and check names, numbers, technical terms, and speaker changes against the recording.
For local processing, use a speech-recognition application based on Whisper or another transcription engine, then open the resulting transcript in LibreOffice Writer. Use File → Save As, select Word 97–2003 format, and save the document with a .doc extension. LibreOffice may first create DOCX depending on the selected filter, so choose Word 97–2003 (*.doc) explicitly.
FFmpeg can inspect or normalize an AAC file before transcription, but it does not perform speech recognition or create a meaningful document by itself. For example, ffmpeg -i input.aac -ar 16000 -ac 1 speech.wav creates a mono, 16 kHz WAV that some local transcription tools accept more reliably; retain the original AAC as the source.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Transcription quality depends on recording clarity, microphone distance, language, vocabulary, speaker overlap, and the recognition engine. Review the DOC output manually when it contains legal, medical, financial, names, addresses, or numerical information. Timestamps and speaker identification may be unavailable or require separate options.
DOC has compatibility limitations: newer Word versions can open it, but some modern layout, font, accessibility, and revision features may be lost when exporting from DOCX or LibreOffice. Use DOC only when the receiving application requires it; otherwise DOCX is usually the better editable format. The resulting document will not be a literal audio-format conversion, and it cannot reproduce tone, pauses, music, or nonverbal sounds as ordinary text.
