What the AAC format is
AAC, or Advanced Audio Coding, is a lossy audio codec used for music, voice recordings, podcasts, audiobooks, and video soundtracks. Apple Music and iTunes, smartphones, voice-recording apps, media players, and many video applications create AAC audio, commonly inside .m4a or .mp4 containers; some applications also use .aac as a standalone file.
AAC contains sound samples, not selectable words. A file renaming operation or ordinary document converter cannot recover a transcript without an automatic speech-recognition step.
What the RTF format is
RTF, or Rich Text Format, is a text-document format supported by Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, WordPad, and many other editors. It can store characters, paragraphs, basic fonts, alignment, lists, and limited formatting while remaining more widely interchangeable than some native word-processing formats.
RTF is suitable when a transcript must be edited, printed, sent to another user, or opened on systems that do not share the same word-processing application. It does not preserve the original AAC audio, and it cannot reproduce vocal tone or recording quality.
How to actually convert AAC to RTF
The simplest method is to use the free converter on 101convert.com, which performs transcription rather than treating the task as a binary audio-format conversion:
- Open the AAC-to-RTF converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the
.aacfile or the AAC-containing.m4afile. - Choose the spoken language if the service provides a language setting. Selecting the correct language improves recognition of vocabulary and punctuation.
- Start the conversion and wait for speech recognition to finish.
- Download the generated
.rtffile, then check names, numbers, punctuation, and specialist terms in a word processor.
No software installation is required for this workflow. The result is a transcription formatted as an RTF document, not a playable audio file embedded in RTF.
Local conversion workflow
For recordings that must remain on a local computer, extract a speech-recognition-friendly WAV file with FFmpeg:
ffmpeg -i input.m4a -ar 16000 -ac 1 speech.wav
Run a local Whisper installation or another speech-recognition application on speech.wav, export the transcript as speech.txt, and convert it to RTF with Pandoc:
pandoc speech.txt -o transcript.rtf
For a standalone AAC file, replace input.m4a with input.aac. The exact Whisper command and supported output formats depend on the installed package; if it exports RTF directly, the intermediate Pandoc step is unnecessary.
Quality and compatibility limitations
Transcription accuracy depends on speech clarity, microphone quality, background noise, overlapping speakers, accents, recording volume, and the recognition model. Lossy AAC compression usually has less effect on recognition than distant microphones or competing speech.
Review the RTF manually when the recording contains proper names, medical or legal terminology, numerical data, timestamps, or multiple speakers. Speaker labels and timestamps are available only if the transcription system supports diarization or time markers; basic RTF export normally contains paragraphs without that metadata.
RTF preserves basic document formatting but may not preserve advanced features such as complex tables, synchronized timestamps, confidence scores, or embedded audio. Keep the original AAC file alongside the transcript when the recording is needed for verification.
