People convert an MKV recording to RTF when they need an editable transcript that opens in Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, or another word processor. The process is transcription, not a direct media-container conversion: the audio is recognized as speech, then the resulting words are saved as a rich-text document.
What the MKV format is
MKV, or Matroska Video, is a multimedia container that can hold video, one or more audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, and metadata. Screen-recording software such as OBS Studio, video editors, cameras, and capture applications commonly create MKV files; media players such as VLC can open them. An MKV may contain speech, music, silence, or several languages, so the transcription result depends on the selected audio track and the speech-recognition tool.
What the RTF format is
RTF, or Rich Text Format, stores editable text with basic formatting such as headings, bold type, paragraphs, lists, and font information. It is supported by Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, WordPad, and many document-processing applications. RTF is useful for editing, proofreading, sharing, and archiving a transcript, but it cannot preserve the original MKV video or audio. Subtitles and timestamps are included only if the transcription workflow explicitly adds them.
How to actually convert MKV to RTF
Online method: Use the converter on 101convert.com when you do not want to install software. Upload the MKV file, choose the audio-to-text or transcription option, select the spoken language if requested, start the conversion, and download the generated RTF document. Review the transcript before sharing it; speech recognition can mishear names, technical terms, overlapping speakers, and low-volume speech.
Local method with FFmpeg and Whisper:
- Install FFmpeg and a Whisper-compatible speech-recognition tool.
- Extract a speech-friendly WAV track from the MKV with
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -vn -ac 1 -ar 16000 -c:a pcm_s16le speech.wav. The-vnoption removes video, while mono, 16 kHz, 16-bit PCM is a suitable input for many transcription models. - Transcribe the extracted audio with Whisper, for example
whisper speech.wav --language English --task transcribe --output_format txt. ReplaceEnglishwith the spoken language; omit the language option when automatic detection is preferable. - Open the generated
speech.txtin LibreOffice Writer or Microsoft Word, correct recognition errors, and save it through File → Save As, selectingRich Text Format (.rtf).
To retain timing, use Whisper's --output_format srt or --output_format vtt, then copy the timestamps and transcript into the document before saving as RTF. For multiple audio tracks, inspect the MKV streams with ffprobe input.mkv and select the required track with FFmpeg's -map option.
Quality and compatibility limitations
RTF quality concerns document formatting, not audio fidelity: the original audio is not embedded, and converting the transcript to RTF cannot improve recognition accuracy. Clear speech, limited background noise, a correct language setting, and a suitable model generally produce better results. Speaker separation, punctuation, timestamps, and terminology correction may require separate processing or manual editing.
Large MKV files can take time to upload or transcribe, and online processing requires sending the recording to the conversion service; use a local workflow for confidential recordings. If the MKV contains no speech, an unsupported codec, or only music, the output may be empty or unusable as a transcript.
