What the WEBM format is
WEBM is a Matroska-based multimedia container designed for web playback. It commonly stores Opus or Vorbis audio, with optional VP8, VP9, or AV1 video. Browsers, WebRTC applications, OBS Studio, screen recorders, video-conferencing tools, and websites frequently create WEBM files.
A WEBM file contains recorded sound, not a written transcript. Converting it to RTF therefore requires automatic or manual speech recognition; simply changing the filename extension cannot produce meaningful document content.
What the RTF format is
RTF, or Rich Text Format, stores editable text with basic formatting such as fonts, sizes, bold and italic styles, paragraphs, lists, and simple tables. Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, WordPad, and many other word processors can open it.
RTF is suitable for distributing a transcript when recipients use different word-processing programs. It does not preserve the original WEBM audio, video, codec data, playback controls, or reliable speaker identity unless those details are added to the transcript.
How to actually convert WEBM to RTF
Use the online converter
- Open the WEBM-to-RTF converter on 101convert.com; the conversion is available free without installing software.
- Upload the WEBM recording and select RTF as the output format.
- Start the conversion and wait for the speech-recognition process to finish. Longer recordings can take more time than ordinary document-format conversions.
- Download the generated RTF file and open it in Word or LibreOffice Writer to correct names, punctuation, and speaker labels.
Use a local transcription workflow
- Install FFmpeg and extract a speech-friendly WAV file from the recording:
ffmpeg -i recording.webm -vn -ac 1 -ar 16000 -c:a pcm_s16le speech.wav
-vn removes video, while mono 16 kHz PCM audio is widely accepted by speech-recognition tools.
- Run a local Whisper installation or another speech-recognition program on
speech.wav. For the command-line Whisper package, a typical command is:
whisper speech.wav --model small --language en --output_format txt
Replace en with the recording language, or omit --language for automatic detection. Larger Whisper models generally improve recognition but require more memory and processing time.
- Open the resulting transcript in LibreOffice Writer, apply headings or speaker labels, then choose File → Save As, select
Rich Text Format (.rtf), and save the document.
For a plain transcript, Pandoc can create the RTF file directly:
pandoc speech.txt -o transcript.rtf
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Recognition accuracy depends on microphone quality, background noise, overlapping speakers, accents, vocabulary, and the selected model. Review the RTF before sharing it, especially names, numbers, technical terms, and punctuation.
Automatic transcription does not reliably identify speakers unless the transcription tool supports speaker diarization. If timestamps matter, generate an SRT or VTT transcript first and preserve selected timestamps manually in the RTF document.
The RTF output contains the recognized words and formatting only. Keep the original WEBM separately when the recording, embedded video, or evidence of the original audio is required.
