What the AMR format is
AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) is a speech-audio format designed for efficient storage and transmission, especially in mobile telephony. AMR-NB commonly uses narrowband speech, while AMR-WB stores wider-band speech with better voice fidelity. Mobile phones, Android voice recorders, telecom systems, and messaging applications can create .amr files; they are often encountered after exporting a voicemail or voice note.
An AMR file contains encoded audio, not a transcript. Renaming .amr to .odt, or placing the audio file inside a document, does not create editable words.
What the ODT format is
ODT (OpenDocument Text) is the editable word-processing format used by LibreOffice Writer and supported by Apache OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, and other office suites. It can store paragraphs, headings, tables, images, page formatting, metadata, and searchable text in a standards-based package.
ODT is appropriate when the result must be corrected, annotated, shared as an office document, or exported later to PDF or DOCX. The audio itself is not normally included unless you separately insert it as an embedded object or link.
How to actually convert AMR to ODT
Use the online converter
- Open the AMR-to-ODT converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the
.amrrecording and choose the spoken language if the service provides a language setting. - Start the conversion and wait for speech recognition to produce the transcript.
- Download the resulting
.odtfile and open it in LibreOffice Writer or another compatible word processor.
This process is a transcription followed by document creation, not a codec-only conversion. Review names, numbers, punctuation, and technical terms after downloading.
Use a local speech-recognition workflow
For recordings that should not be uploaded, convert AMR to a speech-recognition-friendly WAV file with FFmpeg:
ffmpeg -i input.amr -ar 16000 -ac 1 -c:a pcm_s16le speech.wav
Transcribe speech.wav with a local engine such as Whisper or faster-whisper, then paste the transcript into LibreOffice Writer and choose File → Save As, select ODF Text Document (.odt), and save it as transcript.odt. FFmpeg only changes the audio encoding; Whisper or another speech-recognition engine supplies the words.
Quality and compatibility limitations
AMR-NB is optimized for intelligible speech at low bit rates, so background noise, overlapping speakers, clipped recordings, accents, and poor microphone placement can reduce transcription accuracy. AMR-WB generally preserves more speech detail, but it does not guarantee correct recognition.
Automatic transcription can misrecognize proper names, abbreviations, punctuation, speaker changes, and numbers. ODT preserves the recognized text and document formatting, not the original audio quality or a guaranteed word-for-word transcript. For long recordings, split the audio into logical sections and check the resulting document against the recording.
