A WAV recording has to be transcribed before it can become an ODT document, because WAV stores audio and ODT stores formatted text. This conversion is useful when a meeting, interview, lecture, or dictation must be edited and opened in LibreOffice or another office suite.

What the WAV format is

WAV is an audio container commonly used for uncompressed PCM recordings. Microphones, digital recorders, Windows Voice Recorder, Audacity, and audio-production software create WAV files. Its uncompressed audio preserves speech detail for transcription, but produces larger files than MP3 or AAC.

What the ODT format is

ODT is the OpenDocument Text format used by LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice, and other compatible word processors. It stores editable paragraphs, headings, tables, styles, images, and document metadata in an open standard, making it suitable for transcripts that need correction, formatting, printing, or archiving.

How to convert WAV to ODT

Use the built-in online converter

  1. Open the WAV-to-ODT converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .wav recording and start the conversion.
  3. Wait for speech recognition to transcribe the audio and generate the ODT file.
  4. Download the result and open it in LibreOffice Writer or another ODT-compatible program.

This method requires no installed software. Do not upload confidential recordings unless the service's data-handling terms meet your requirements.

Transcribe locally with Whisper and save in LibreOffice

  1. Install Whisper in a Python environment with pip install -U openai-whisper. The installation also requires FFmpeg.
  2. Transcribe the recording with whisper recording.wav --model medium --language en --output_format txt. Replace en with the spoken language code, or omit --language for automatic detection.
  3. Open the generated recording.txt file in LibreOffice Writer.
  4. Check speaker names, punctuation, numbers, and technical terms, then choose File → Save As, select ODF Text Document (.odt), and save.

For long or difficult recordings, a larger Whisper model generally improves recognition but needs more memory and processing time. A computer without suitable hardware can use the smaller small or base model.

Quality and compatibility limits

The conversion is not a direct audio-container conversion: speech recognition creates the document's words, so the ODT cannot reproduce tone, pauses, overlapping speakers, or non-speech sounds reliably. Background noise, accents, low volume, multiple speakers, and specialized vocabulary increase transcription errors.

WAV sample rate and codec affect recognition compatibility. Standard PCM WAV files are the safest input; unusual codecs may need conversion with FFmpeg, for example ffmpeg -i input.wav -ac 1 -ar 16000 normalized.wav. Review the transcript manually before treating it as an accurate record. ODT files open reliably in LibreOffice and OpenOffice, but complex formatting may change when opened in Microsoft Word; export a checked copy as PDF when fixed page layout is required.
