Free online FB2 to HTML converter

A browser, website CMS, or text editor may require HTML instead of FB2 to display, publish, or edit an ebook. Converting also makes the content usable on devices and applications without FB2 support.

What the FB2 format is

FB2, or FictionBook 2, is an XML-based ebook format designed mainly for novels and other text-heavy books. It stores chapters, paragraphs, titles, author details, annotations, poems, quotations, cover images, and other metadata in a structured document.

FB2 is common in ebook libraries, Russian-language publishing, ebook managers, and reading applications such as FBReader and calibre. Files normally use the .fb2 extension; some are distributed as .fb2.zip, which contains an FB2 file and may include images.

What the HTML format is

HTML is the markup format rendered by web browsers. It can be published on a website, opened without an ebook reader, edited as source code, and combined with CSS for layout or JavaScript for interactive features.

Conversion can preserve headings, paragraphs, emphasis, links, lists, tables, and images. Unlike FB2, HTML does not define one standard ebook package: images and stylesheets may be separate files, or images may be embedded as data URLs. The visual result depends on the generated CSS and the browser.

How to convert an FB2 file to HTML

Using 101convert.com

1. Open the FB2-to-HTML converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select or drop the .fb2 file. If the source is .fb2.zip, extract the FB2 file first unless the converter accepts the archive.
3. Start the conversion and wait for processing to finish.
4. Download the HTML file and open it in a browser. Check headings, paragraphs, character encoding, links, and images.

Using calibre on a desktop

1. Install calibre and open it.
2. Choose Add books and select the FB2 file.
3. Select the book and choose Convert books.

Use plain HTML when the destination needs a browser-readable document. HTMLZ is a ZIP package containing HTML and associated resources, so it is preferable when the stylesheet and image files must remain together.

Quality and compatibility

• Converters may place FB2 metadata in a title block, HTML metadata, or headings. Inspect the result if the author, title, or publication details must appear in a specific location.
• FB2 images are often embedded in the XML and may be extracted as separate image files. Keep the generated HTML, image files, and stylesheet together when their paths are relative.
• HTML does not preserve an ebook reader's exact typography or pagination. Adjust fonts, margins, line height, chapter spacing, and other rules in the generated CSS.
• Poetry, footnotes, nested sections, tables, custom FB2 elements, and embedded fonts can require manual correction because converters map them differently to HTML.
• Moving only the HTML file can cause missing images or stylesheets. Use HTMLZ or copy the complete output directory when the conversion creates multiple files.
• Malformed FB2 XML, unsupported entities, or incorrect source encoding can produce missing characters or failed conversions. Test one file first and verify that the output uses UTF-8 before converting a large collection.
