An e-reader or ebook application may support .fb2 but not provide comfortable reading from a fixed-layout PDF. Converting the file creates reflowable text, structured chapters, and editable book metadata, although the result may need correction.

What PDF is

PDF is a page-description format designed to preserve page dimensions, fonts, positioning, graphics, and print appearance across operating systems. Word processors, desktop-publishing software, scanners, web browsers, and virtual PDF printers create PDF files; Adobe Acrobat Reader, web browsers, and Preview can open them.

Contracts, manuals, academic papers, forms, and print-ready documents commonly use PDF because their layout must remain stable. A PDF is usually difficult to reflow: its text may be stored as individually positioned fragments rather than as a continuous sequence of chapters and paragraphs. A PDF can also contain scanned page images, encryption, permissions restrictions, embedded fonts, columns, tables, and other layout features that complicate extraction.

What FB2 is

FB2, or FictionBook 2, is an XML-based ebook format intended mainly for novels and other structured, text-heavy publications. It stores semantic elements such as the title, authors, genres, annotation, chapters, paragraphs, emphasis, hyperlinks, poems, quotations, and images instead of fixed page coordinates.

FB2 readers can reflow the text, change fonts and margins, and adapt the display to different screen sizes. Chapter navigation and book metadata are generally more useful than in a PDF. The format is especially common in ebook applications and readers used in Russian-speaking markets. FB2 is a suitable target when reading flexibility matters more than preserving the exact printed page design.

How to convert a PDF with Calibre

1. Install Calibre, open its library, select Add books, and choose the PDF.
2. Select the imported book and choose Convert books.
3. Set the output format to FB2.
4. Correct the title, author, language, and cover in the metadata fields before starting. These values are used to build the FB2 book information.
5. Review the PDF input options. Remove detected headers, footers, and page numbers when they have been inserted into the body text. Enable chapter detection only if headings are consistent throughout the document.
6. Click OK. Calibre writes the .fb2 file to the book’s library folder. Use Save to disk to copy it to another location.

The file extension selects the output format in this command. Conversion quality depends on the PDF’s internal text structure, not on whether Calibre is used graphically or from the command line.

How to convert without installing software

How to handle a scanned PDF

A scanned PDF contains page images rather than selectable characters. Run OCR first with suitable OCR software, then convert the searchable PDF in Calibre. For example, OCRmyPDF can create a searchable copy:

OCR errors become text errors in the FB2 file, so check names, numbers, punctuation, Cyrillic characters, and other language-specific text after conversion. If the PDF is image-only, direct conversion without OCR usually produces little or no usable ebook text.

Quality and compatibility limits

PDF-to-FB2 conversion cannot reliably preserve complex page design. Multi-column layouts, sidebars, positioned text, tables, mathematical notation, footnotes, forms, decorative initials, captions, and text layered over images may be reordered, merged, or lost. Images can usually be transferred, but their size, placement, and captions may require manual editing.

Encrypted or permission-restricted PDFs may prevent text extraction; remove protection only when you have the legal right and required password. A PDF with embedded fonts may still extract incorrectly if its character mapping is nonstandard, and hyphenation can leave unwanted line-break hyphens in the output.

Open the resulting file in an FB2 reader before copying it to a device. Check chapter order, paragraph breaks, hyphenation, quotation marks, non-Latin characters, hyperlinks, cover, author, language, and annotation. For books with complicated layouts, extract the text, clean it in an editor, and then create or revise the FB2 structure instead of relying on an unedited automatic conversion.
