A comic-reading app may accept CBZ archives but not PDF files, or may provide better page navigation and zoom for CBZ. Converting can also produce image pages for sharing or archiving, but it replaces the PDF's document structure with raster images.
What the PDF format is
PDF is a fixed-layout document format standardized as ISO 32000 and originally developed by Adobe. Acrobat, word processors, office suites, scanners, publishing software, and design applications create PDFs containing text, fonts, vector graphics, images, annotations, bookmarks, links, and accessibility data. Businesses, publishers, schools, archives, and individuals use it for forms, manuals, books, magazines, scanned documents, and comics.
What the CBZ format is
CBZ is a comic-book archive: a ZIP container whose top level normally contains sequential JPEG, PNG, or sometimes GIF images. Changing a ZIP filename from .zip to .cbz creates the conventional extension; it does not change the archive's internal format. Comic readers use the image sequence for page navigation, zooming, reading-direction settings, and sometimes panel viewing.
CBZ suits applications designed for comic archives and makes each rendered page directly available as an image. It does not preserve PDF text, links, bookmarks, annotations, or document metadata.
How to convert the file
Using PDF24 Creator and 7-Zip on Windows
- Open the PDF in PDF24 Creator and choose its PDF-to-image function.
- Export one image per page. Use JPEG for smaller color or grayscale files; use PNG for line art, sharp text, or pages where lossless output matters.
- Choose approximately 150–200 DPI for ordinary screen reading and 300 DPI when small lettering needs more detail. Higher resolution increases the archive size.
- Check the exported pages and rename them with leading zeros, such as
page-001.jpg,page-002.jpg, andpage-010.jpg. This prevents alphabetical sorting from placing page 10 before page 2. - Select only the page images, choose 7-Zip → Add to archive, set the archive format to
zip, and create the archive. ZIP compression can be set to Store for JPEG files because JPEG is already compressed; PNG files can benefit from normal ZIP compression. - Rename the result from
comic.ziptocomic.cbz. Disable automatic file-extension hiding in Explorer if necessary so the result does not becomecomic.cbz.zip.
Using Poppler from the command line
Poppler's pdftoppm renders PDF pages on Linux, macOS with Homebrew, and Windows builds. The following commands create JPEG pages and use Python to sort them numerically and write zero-padded names into a CBZ archive:
mkdir comic-pages
pdftoppm -jpeg -r 180 input.pdf comic-pages/page
python3 - <<'PY'
from pathlib import Path
import re
import zipfile
files = sorted(
Path('comic-pages').glob('page-*.jpg'),
key=lambda p: int(re.search(r'(\d+)$', p.stem).group(1))
)
with zipfile.ZipFile('comic.cbz', 'w', compression=zipfile.ZIP_STORED) as archive:
for number, path in enumerate(files, 1):
archive.write(path, f'page-{number:03d}.jpg')
PY
The -r 180 option sets 180 DPI; change it to 150, 200, or 300 according to the lettering and desired size. For PNG output, replace -jpeg with -png, change the Python glob to page-*.png, and change the archive name suffix to .png. Use ZIP_DEFLATED instead of ZIP_STORED for PNG pages if smaller archives are more important than processing speed.
Using an online converter
PDF24 Tools, CloudConvert, and Convertio are established online services that can convert PDF pages to JPEG or PNG. Direct CBZ output is not consistently offered, so verify the selected service's output format; if it produces a ZIP archive, rename that file to .cbz only after checking that it contains page images at the archive's top level. For confidential, password-protected, very large, or personally identifying PDFs, use PDF24 Creator or Poppler locally instead of uploading the file. Check file-size limits, retention terms, and download-link expiration before using an online service.
Quality and compatibility limits
Rendering turns every PDF page into a bitmap. Selectable and searchable text, hyperlinks, bookmarks, annotations, embedded fonts, vector artwork, form fields, and accessibility metadata are discarded. OCR performed in the PDF is not carried into the CBZ as a searchable layer; only the visible rendered page remains.
JPEG creates smaller archives but can introduce ringing or halos around lettering and loses quality when recompressed. PNG preserves hard edges and monochrome line art but can make full-color pages substantially larger. Render at the PDF's intended page size and inspect small text before converting the entire file.
Keep only page images in the archive's top level; remove __MACOSX, .DS_Store, thumbnails, and nested folders for broader compatibility. Use zero-padded filenames, include the cover as the first image, and test the result in a reader such as YACReader, CDisplayEx, or Panels. A damaged or password-protected source may need repair or unlocking before it can be rendered.
