Some e-book readers, cataloguing applications, and editing tools accept FB2 but not Amazon’s AZW3 format. Converting a DRM-free AZW3 file creates a more portable, XML-based copy for FB2-compatible software while preserving much of the book’s text and metadata.

What the AZW3 format is

AZW3, also called Kindle Format 8 (KF8), is Amazon’s proprietary e-book format for Kindle devices and applications. It belongs to the MOBI family and stores reflowable HTML content with CSS styling, images, tables, embedded fonts, and enhanced typography. Publishers and Kindle tools can create AZW3 files, and users may encounter them as DRM-free personal documents or purchased books without access protection.

DRM is applied separately from the basic format. An AZW3 file protected by Amazon DRM normally cannot be imported or converted by standard software.

What the FB2 format is

FB2 (FictionBook 2) is an open XML-based e-book format used widely by FB2-focused readers, particularly in Russia and Eastern Europe. It represents a book’s structure rather than a fixed page design, including metadata, sections, paragraphs, emphasis, poems, quotations, footnotes, images, and cover information.

Because its content and metadata are stored as structured XML, FB2 files are relatively easy to inspect, edit, archive, and process. Applications such as FBReader, CoolReader, and other e-book tools can generate the final layout for the screen in use. FB2 is best suited to text-focused books, not fixed-layout or highly interactive publications.

Convert the file on 101convert.com

1. Open the AZW3-to-FB2 converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the DRM-free .azw3 file.
3. Select FB2 as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .fb2 file and open it in an FB2 reader to check the content.

Online conversion requires uploading the source file to a third party. Do not submit confidential books or files whose licence or distribution terms prohibit third-party processing. DRM-protected books generally cannot be converted this way.

Convert with Calibre

Calibre is a free desktop e-book manager that can import DRM-free AZW3 files and export FB2 files without uploading them.

1. Install and open Calibre, then choose Add books and select book.azw3.
2. Select the imported book and choose Convert books → Convert individually.
3. Set FB2 in the output-format selector, usually shown in the upper-right corner.
4. Open Metadata to correct the title, author, series, language, and cover before conversion.
5. Review Structure detection if the source has incorrect chapter breaks. Check the FB2 output options for cover and annotation handling.
6. Click OK. Select the book after conversion and choose Open containing folder to locate the generated .fb2 file.

Use full paths when the files are outside the current directory. The destination filename must end in .fb2.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Do not use conversion to bypass DRM. Convert only files you are authorized to process. Calibre and ordinary conversion services normally reject or fail on DRM-protected Kindle books.
• FB2 does not reproduce every Kindle feature. Complex CSS, floating elements, drop caps, embedded fonts, interactive content, multimedia, and fixed-layout pages may be simplified, rearranged, or discarded.
• Chapter detection depends on the AZW3 book’s internal markup. If the table of contents is wrong, adjust structure-detection settings in Calibre and convert again, or edit the resulting XML with an FB2-compatible editor.
• Metadata and cover images usually transfer, but their preservation is not guaranteed. Verify the title, author, series data, language, cover, chapter list, italics, footnotes, images, and paragraph spacing.
• Open the output in FBReader or another target reader rather than judging it only by the .fb2 extension. Manually edited files should also be checked for well-formed XML.
