Older Kindle software, legacy readers, and some ebook-management tools accept AZW or MOBI but not AZW3. Converting a DRM-free AZW3 book can restore compatibility, although the older format may lose advanced layout features.
What the AZW3 format is
AZW3 is Amazon’s Kindle Format 8 (KF8) ebook format. It supports richer CSS, embedded fonts, tables, images, and more precise layouts than the older MOBI-based format, so it is commonly used for newer Kindle books and publisher-created Kindle files.
An .azw3 file may contain Amazon DRM. Calibre and ordinary online converters cannot convert a DRM-protected book, and this process must be limited to files you are authorized to use. The extension alone does not reveal whether DRM is present.
What the AZW format is
AZW is an older Amazon Kindle ebook format in the MOBI/PRC family, commonly containing MOBI7 content. Its main advantage is compatibility with older Kindle devices, applications, and software that do not support KF8.
Compared with AZW3, AZW generally offers less control over CSS, typography, tables, embedded fonts, and complex page layouts. AZW can also be DRM-protected; its filename does not indicate licensing status.
How to convert the file
Using Calibre
- Install the current desktop version of Calibre from
calibre-ebook.com. - Open Calibre, select Add books, and import the DRM-free
.azw3file. - Select the book and choose Convert books → Convert individually.
- Set the output format to MOBI. In the MOBI output settings, select the old MOBI type for an older Kindle or reader. Use the combined option only if the destination needs both older and newer MOBI compatibility.
- Click OK. Calibre saves the result as
.mobiin its library folder. - Test the MOBI file on the target software or device. If it specifically requires an
.azwfilename, make a copy and rename the copy from.mobito.azw.
Calibre normally does not offer a separate AZW output choice. Older AZW files are MOBI-family files, so producing MOBI and then changing the extension is the usual desktop method. The extension change is not itself a conversion; the ebook must first contain compatible MOBI-format data. On Windows, enable File Explorer → View → Show → File name extensions before renaming to avoid creating a name such as book.azw.mobi.
Calibre’s command-line equivalent is:
ebook-convert input.azw3 output.mobi --output-profile kindle
Rename output.mobi only after checking that the resulting file works on the intended reader. The graphical interface provides more control over the MOBI type, metadata, cover, table of contents, and image sizing.
Using an online converter
Services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar may offer AZW3-to-MOBI conversion, and some services may list AZW as a target. Upload only a DRM-free book without private or sensitive content, select MOBI or AZW if available, and download the result. If the service produces MOBI, rename it to .azw only when the destination accepts MOBI-family files.
Check the provider’s retention and privacy terms before uploading. Online services usually expose fewer controls than Calibre and may alter complex layouts, fonts, tables, images, or metadata. A service that accepts the upload may still produce a file that is incompatible with a particular Kindle application or device.
Quality and compatibility limits
Conversion from KF8 to older MOBI content can remove or alter embedded fonts, advanced CSS, nested layouts, drop caps, scalable graphics, large tables, image sizing, and other AZW3 features. Check the cover, table of contents, chapter breaks, hyperlinks, italics, margins, and image resolution on the target reader.
The process does not remove DRM, add DRM, or guarantee compatibility with Amazon’s delivery services. A renamed, DRM-free MOBI-family file may work when copied to a compatible device, but Amazon publishing and delivery workflows can require files generated through their current systems. Keep the original .azw3 file as the archival copy.

Frequently asked questions
Will converting AZW3 to AZW remove advanced formatting?
Yes, AZW is based on the older MOBI format, so some newer AZW3 features may be flattened or lost. Complex CSS styling, fixed positioning, embedded fonts, tables, and other advanced layout elements may not look the same.
Will my AZW3 images and links still work in AZW?
Most standard images and links should remain, but image layout and unsupported interactive or advanced elements may change. Large or unusually formatted images are more likely to be resized, repositioned, or omitted by an older-format conversion.
Is AZW editable after converting from AZW3?
No, AZW remains a compiled ebook rather than an easily editable source document. Converting it back to AZW3 cannot reliably restore formatting or features that were removed during the conversion.
Why does my converted AZW have broken formatting or missing content?
This usually happens when the AZW3 ebook uses KF8 features that the older MOBI-based AZW format cannot represent. Reflowing the book with simpler styles may help, but the original layout cannot always be preserved.
