Pretty much every type of document can be used for making ebooks and this also includes files from Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx). AZW ebooks for Kindle are pretty much just variant of MOBI format that include DRM, it is unlikely you need to create DRM for your ebooks, which means that export to standard MOBI would be perhaps the better choice.
