Free online AZW3 to MOBI converter

Conversion is needed when an older Kindle application, e-reader, or library tool accepts .mobi but not .azw3. It can also provide a legacy copy of a DRM-free ebook for archiving, but it cannot make a DRM-protected book usable in another format.

What the AZW3 format is

AZW3, also called Kindle Format 8 or KF8, is Amazon's ebook format for reflowable content. It uses HTML and CSS-based structures and can support embedded fonts, images, tables, improved typography, and more complex styling than the original MOBI format. Amazon publishing and delivery systems can produce AZW3 files, which may be stored with an .azw3 extension on Kindle devices or in Kindle-related software.

An AZW3 file may contain Amazon-specific metadata and DRM. Standard converters such as Calibre cannot normally open an encrypted file, and conversion does not provide a legitimate method for removing DRM. Use an unrestricted copy or an export method authorized by the rights holder.

What the MOBI format is

MOBI is an older reflowable ebook format derived from the Mobipocket format. It supports text, basic styling, a table of contents, and images, and remains useful for legacy Kindle software, older e-readers, and applications that specifically require .mobi. Its layout and typography support are more limited than AZW3's.

MOBI is not automatically smaller than AZW3. Output size depends on image resolution, embedded fonts, compression, metadata, and the converter's settings. Modern Kindle workflows generally favor EPUB or Amazon's newer delivery formats, so MOBI is mainly appropriate when the destination explicitly requires it.

How to convert with Calibre

Calibre is the most capable desktop option for DRM-free AZW3 files because it supports metadata editing, batch processing, and MOBI output.

1. Install and open Calibre from its official desktop distribution.
2. Choose Add books and select the DRM-free .azw3 file.
3. Select the book and choose Convert books → Convert individually.
4. Set the output format in the upper-right corner to MOBI.
5. In the MOBI output settings, choose Old for the widest compatibility with older readers. Choose Both if the destination supports Calibre's combined old-and-new MOBI output; use the newer option only when the target device is known to support it.
6. Check Metadata for the title, author, cover, and series details. Use Look & Feel only to correct unwanted margins, spacing, or font handling.
7. Click OK. Calibre saves the result in the book's author and title folder.
8. Right-click the book and choose Open containing folder to find the generated .mobi file.

For batch conversion, select multiple books and choose Convert books → Bulk convert. Calibre's command-line utility can convert a single file with ebook-convert input.azw3 output.mobi; quote both paths when they contain spaces.
