Free online LIT to MOBI converter

Older Microsoft Reader books may need conversion before they can be opened on software or legacy Kindle hardware that lacks LIT support. A DRM-free LIT file can be converted to MOBI for transfer, archival, or use with older ebook applications.

What the LIT format is

LIT is Microsoft’s proprietary ebook format for Microsoft Reader, released mainly in the early 2000s. Older ebook collections, Windows backups, and some historical library downloads may contain LIT files. The format can store reflowable text, images, bookmarks, and metadata.

Some commercial LIT books use Microsoft Reader DRM. A converter cannot process protected content; conversion is limited to files that are DRM-free or for which protection has already been removed through an authorized process.

What the MOBI format is

MOBI is a legacy, reflowable ebook format associated with older Amazon Kindle devices and applications. It supports adjustable text size, basic tables of contents, embedded images, and book metadata, so it works best with text-focused books and simple formatting.

MOBI has fewer typography and layout capabilities than EPUB and AZW3. Newer Kindle workflows generally use EPUB for Amazon delivery or AZW3 for compatible sideloading, but MOBI remains useful when the receiving device or application specifically requires it.

Convert with the 101convert.com converter

1. Open the LIT-to-MOBI conversion tool on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the DRM-free .lit file.
3. Choose MOBI as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .mobi file when processing finishes.
5. Open the file in the intended Kindle application or compatible ebook reader and check its chapters, cover, and text layout.

Do not upload books containing confidential information or files whose license prohibits third-party processing. A protected LIT file may fail to upload or convert, and changing the output format cannot bypass DRM.

Convert with Calibre

Calibre is a free desktop ebook manager that can import DRM-free LIT files and export MOBI.

1. Install Calibre from its official website and open it.
2. Choose Add books and select the .lit file.
3. Select the imported book and choose Convert books.
4. Set the output format in the upper-right corner to MOBI.
5. Review Metadata and Table of Contents; correct the title, author, cover, and chapter structure if needed.
6. Leave the normal reflowable ebook settings unchanged unless the target software requires a specific MOBI variant.
7. Click OK. Find the output through Save to disk or Open containing folder.

Calibre also includes a command-line converter:

ebook-convert input.lit output.mobi

Metadata can be supplied during conversion, for example:

ebook-convert input.lit output.mobi --title "Book title" --authors "Author Name"

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion may alter fonts, page breaks, tables, footnotes, cover dimensions, embedded fonts, and complex positioning. Columns, fixed-layout pages, unusual typography, and poorly structured chapters are especially likely to change.

Inspect the MOBI in Calibre’s ebook viewer or on the target device before deleting the source. Missing text, a DRM error, or refusal to import usually indicates protected content rather than a correctable MOBI setting.

Keep the original LIT file as an archive. For newer Kindle devices and applications, EPUB or AZW3 may provide better compatibility and formatting than legacy MOBI.
