Understanding LIT and TPZ file formats

LIT files are eBook files created by Microsoft for its Microsoft Reader software. The format, known as Microsoft Reader eBook, was popular in the early 2000s but is now discontinued. LIT files support DRM and can contain text, images, and bookmarks.

TPZ files are Amazon Kindle Topaz eBooks. This proprietary format was used by Amazon for certain Kindle books, especially those with complex formatting or scanned pages. TPZ files support advanced layout features and embedded fonts.

Why convert LIT to TPZ?

Converting LIT to TPZ is useful if you want to read older Microsoft Reader eBooks on Kindle devices that support the Topaz format. Since both formats are now largely obsolete, conversion is mainly for archival or compatibility purposes.

How to convert LIT to TPZ

Direct conversion from LIT to TPZ is not natively supported by most eBook management tools. However, you can use a two-step process:

1. Convert LIT to a more common format (such as EPUB or MOBI) using Calibre.
2. Convert the resulting file to TPZ using KindleGen, Amazon's official eBook converter.

Recommended software for LIT to TPZ conversion

• Calibre: A free, open-source eBook manager that can convert LIT files to EPUB or MOBI. To convert, use Add books → Convert books and select your desired output format.
• KindleGen: Amazon's command-line tool for creating Kindle books in TPZ format. After converting your LIT file to MOBI or EPUB, use KindleGen to generate a TPZ file.

Step-by-step conversion process

1. Install Calibre and add your LIT file using Add books.
2. Convert the LIT file to MOBI or EPUB using Convert books.
3. Download and install KindleGen from Amazon's website.
4. Open a command prompt and run:
   kindlegen yourfile.mobi -o output.tpz
5. Your TPZ file will be created in the output directory.

Important notes

• DRM-protected LIT files cannot be converted unless the DRM is removed.
• TPZ format is deprecated and not supported on newer Kindle devices.
• Always check copyright and licensing before converting eBooks.
