Convert APNX to MOBI

A legacy Kindle reader or ebook application may require a complete .mobi book, while the available .apnx file is only a companion file. Convert the associated ebook source, not the APNX file, because APNX does not contain the book's text or layout.

What the APNX format is

APNX means Amazon Kindle Page Number Index. Kindle devices and applications use it to map locations in a specific ebook to printed-style page numbers.

An APNX file contains page-location and indexing data for a matching Kindle ebook; it does not contain the book's text, images, cover, fonts, or formatting. It may appear beside an .azw, .azw3, or .mobi file in an older Kindle folder, backup, or ebook package. The APNX file is therefore not a standalone ebook and cannot be converted into a complete MOBI book.

What the MOBI format is

MOBI is a reflowable ebook format used by older Kindle hardware, Kindle applications, and some third-party readers. A MOBI file packages ebook text, metadata, and commonly images in a structure designed for adjustable font sizes and small screens.

MOBI remains useful when a legacy device, ebook-management program, or publishing workflow specifically requires .mobi. EPUB is generally preferred for current ebook distribution, and newer Kindle workflows use formats such as KFX or AZW; MOBI has limited support for modern typography, complex CSS, fixed layouts, and interactive content.

How to convert the associated ebook

1. Find the ebook that matches the APNX filename or title. Prefer an unprotected .epub, HTML, or DOCX source. An accompanying .azw, .azw3, or .mobi file may be DRM-protected and may not be convertible.
2. Install Calibre from calibre-ebook.com. It provides local EPUB, HTML, DOCX, and other ebook conversion and metadata tools.
3. In Calibre, select Add books and import the source file. Calibre normally cannot convert a DRM-protected Kindle book; use only files and DRM-removal methods permitted by applicable law and the rights holder's terms.
4. Select the book and choose Convert books → Convert individually. Set the output format to MOBI.
5. Correct the title, author, cover, table of contents, and language in the conversion settings. Check Look & feel and MOBI output for image sizing, table-of-contents behavior, and other device-specific options.
6. Select OK. After conversion, use Click to open in the book details panel to locate the generated .mobi file, then test it on the intended reader or in a compatible viewer.

Kindle Previewer is useful for checking how an EPUB or other supported source renders on Kindle devices, but it cannot reconstruct an ebook from APNX data. For a current Kindle workflow, validate an EPUB in Previewer rather than creating MOBI unless the target device specifically requires it.

Online conversion options

CloudConvert and Zamzar can convert supported EPUB or DOCX files to MOBI through a web browser. Upload the source ebook, choose MOBI as the output, start the conversion, and download the result; uploading an APNX file will not produce a usable ebook.

Use a local Calibre conversion for copyrighted, private, or DRM-protected material. Online services require uploading the source and may retain files under their terms; they also cannot recover content absent from APNX.

Quality and compatibility limits

Converting the associated source does not recreate the original APNX page map. Page numbers depend on the exact ebook package, pagination data, typography, and device or application settings, so the new MOBI may display different page numbers or none at all.

Inspect the result for altered line breaks, missing fonts, broken links, table and footnote errors, image scaling, and problems with right-to-left text. MOBI conversion is most reliable for ordinary reflowable books and is less suitable for comics, textbooks, complex CSS, and fixed-layout pages.
