Free online TXT to EPUB converter

Some e-readers, reading apps, and library systems accept EPUB but not plain TXT files. Converting also adds chapters, metadata, navigation, and reflowable text when sharing or editing a manuscript.

What the TXT format is

TXT is a plain-text format that stores characters and line breaks without reliable information about fonts, headings, images, footnotes, chapters, or page layout. Text editors, note-taking applications, programming tools, terminals, and word processors create TXT files; common uses include manuscripts, logs, exported notes, source data, and older e-books.

Common character encodings include UTF-8, UTF-16, and Windows-1252. A byte-order mark may identify some UTF-8 or UTF-16 files, but many TXT files provide no encoding information. Opening or converting a file with the wrong encoding can corrupt accented letters, em dashes, and non-Latin scripts.

What the EPUB format is

EPUB is a ZIP-based e-book container containing XHTML content, CSS, metadata, a package document, and navigation files. Most EPUBs are reflowable: the reading application adjusts line wrapping, font size, and page breaks for each screen instead of preserving fixed pages.

EPUB can contain chapter navigation, title and author metadata, a cover, hyperlinks, images, embedded fonts, and accessibility information. EPUB 3 supports modern HTML and accessibility features, although individual reading applications may support them incompletely. EPUB is widely used by e-readers, phones, tablets, library systems, and desktop reading software; older Kindle devices generally do not open EPUB files directly over USB, although Amazon's Send to Kindle service can accept EPUB.

How to convert a TXT file

Using Calibre

1. Install and open Calibre.
2. Select Add books and choose the .txt file.
3. Select the imported book and choose Convert books.
4. Set the output format to EPUB.
5. Enter the title, author, language, and other metadata. Add a cover if required.
6. Check the TXT input settings and select the source's actual encoding. Preserve line breaks when each short line is intentional; enable paragraph detection only when blank lines separate ordinary paragraphs.
7. Select OK. Calibre saves the EPUB in its library; use Save to disk to create a separate file.

Calibre is the simplest desktop workflow for a direct conversion because it combines encoding selection, metadata, cover handling, and EPUB packaging. Its automatic chapter detection cannot reliably infer chapters from arbitrary plain text, so review the result rather than accepting the defaults blindly.

Using Pandoc

Pandoc is suitable for repeatable command-line conversions. For a plain TXT file whose paragraphs are separated by blank lines, use:

pandoc input.txt -o output.epub --metadata title='Book title' --metadata author='Author name'

A TXT file normally contains no semantic headings, so Pandoc cannot create a dependable chapter hierarchy from it. For chapter structure, add Markdown headings such as # Chapter 1, save the file as input.md, and convert it with:

pandoc input.md -o output.epub --toc --metadata title='Book title' --metadata author='Author name'

Use quotes appropriate to the command shell when metadata contains spaces or special characters.

Using LibreOffice

1. Open the TXT file in LibreOffice Writer and choose the correct character encoding if prompted.
2. Apply heading styles to chapter titles and a normal paragraph style to body text. Correct paragraph breaks and remove unwanted hard line breaks.
3. Choose File → Export as EPUB.
4. Set the EPUB version, title, author, cover, and layout options, then export.

LibreOffice is preferable when the source needs proofreading or manual restructuring before export. Its EPUB export options and exact menu labels can vary by version.

Converting without installing software

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Download the resulting EPUB and inspect it in a reading application before sharing it, especially if the source contains non-ASCII characters or many chapters.

Quality and compatibility limits

A TXT file cannot supply typography, images, footnotes, chapter hierarchy, or page breaks that were never stored in it. Converters can use only clues such as blank lines, repeated chapter markers, and capitalization, so the output may require manual editing.

First identify the original encoding, then decode the file correctly and save it as UTF-8 when possible. Inspect the EPUB for replacement characters, missing symbols, unwanted line breaks, merged paragraphs, incorrect chapter detection, missing covers, and inaccurate metadata.

Keep the EPUB structure simple for broad compatibility: standard XHTML, basic CSS, a valid package document, and a navigation document work on more readers than complex CSS, scripts, unusual fonts, or fixed-layout content. Validate the finished file with EPUBCheck and open it in at least one desktop or mobile EPUB reader. EPUB support and feature support vary by device, and an EPUB that passes validation may still require adjustments for a particular reader.
