Free online TEXT to ASC converter

Legacy engineering, publishing, and data-entry software may require a document to use the .asc extension and ASCII-compatible text. Converting a .text file preserves its plain-text content while meeting that filename or encoding requirement.

What the TEXT format is

.text is a generic filename extension for unformatted character data. A TEXT file normally contains paragraphs, line breaks, tabs, and punctuation, but no fonts, images, page layout, or embedded document structure.

Basic editors such as Windows Notepad, macOS TextEdit in plain-text mode, Vim, and Emacs create TEXT files. Databases, scripts, and office applications can also export them. Some systems use .text instead of the more common .txt; the extension does not identify a special internal format.

What the ASC format is

In the Documents category, .asc generally identifies an ASCII text document. ASCII is a 7-bit character set containing standard Latin letters, digits, basic punctuation, spaces, and control characters. ASC files are used in older applications, technical workflows, data exchange, and other systems that require readable plain text.

ASC files are small, portable, and easy to inspect with any text editor. Their structure may be identical to a TXT or TEXT file. If the receiving application checks only the extension, renaming the file may be sufficient; if it checks the encoding or a specific record structure, the content must also be converted or reformatted.

How to convert TEXT to ASC

Use the converter on 101convert.com when the source is ordinary plain text and you do not want to install software. Select the TEXT-to-ASC converter, upload the .text file, start the conversion, and download the resulting .asc file.

Rename the extension when the destination requires only the .asc filename:

1. Make a copy of the original file.
2. Enable filename extensions in the file manager.
3. Rename notes.text to notes.asc.
4. Open the copy in a text editor and verify that the content is unchanged and readable.

Renaming does not change the character encoding. Do not use it alone when the destination explicitly requires ASCII.

Convert the encoding with iconv on Linux or macOS when the source is UTF-8 and the destination requires 7-bit ASCII:

iconv -f UTF-8 -t ASCII//TRANSLIT input.text -o output.asc

Replace UTF-8 with the actual source encoding. //TRANSLIT approximates unsupported characters such as accented letters or curly quotation marks; without it, conversion can fail at the first character that ASCII cannot represent.

In Windows PowerShell, write ASCII output with:

Get-Content -Raw input.text | Set-Content -Encoding ascii output.asc

For a graphical workflow, open the file in a text editor that exposes encoding choices, select an ASCII output encoding or the code page specified by the receiving application, and save the file with an .asc extension. In LibreOffice Writer, use File → Save As, choose Text, enter an .asc filename, and confirm the character-set and line-ending options in the export dialog.

Quality and compatibility limits

Converting to ASCII can permanently replace or remove emoji, non-Latin alphabets, accented letters, em dashes, curly quotes, and other characters outside the ASCII range. Preserve the original TEXT file and inspect the converted output.

Line endings can affect older software. Windows commonly uses CRLF, while Linux and macOS commonly use LF. If the target shows the file as one long line or displays extra symbols, resave it with the line-ending convention expected by that application.

Some programs use .asc for a defined text syntax, such as records with required headers, fields, delimiters, signatures, or other application-specific data. A generic TEXT-to-ASC conversion changes the extension and, if requested, the character encoding; it does not create those required records or validate the file against a proprietary specification.
