How to convert word to html file

A website, content-management system, email template, or browser editor may require HTML instead of a .doc or .docx document. Converting the file makes its content browser-readable, but complex Word layouts often need manual cleanup before publication.

What the Word format is

Word documents usually use .docx, Microsoft Word’s Office Open XML format introduced with Word 2007. Older documents use the binary .doc format. Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages, and document-management systems can open or create these files.

Word stores editable text, paragraph and character styles, tables, images, headers, footers, comments, tracked changes, fields, and print-oriented page settings. Its paginated layout does not map exactly to HTML’s flowing, browser-based layout.

What HTML is

HTML, normally saved with an .html or .htm extension, uses elements such as <p>, <h1>, <table>, and <img> to define web-page structure. Browsers, websites, intranets, email systems, and content-management systems can render it.

HTML can be edited in a code editor, inserted into a web page, indexed by search systems, and styled for different screen sizes. Depending on the converter, images are saved in a supporting folder beside the HTML file or embedded directly in the markup.

Convert a Word file to HTML

Using 101convert.com:

  1. Open the Word-to-HTML converter on 101convert.com; it runs without installed software and can be used free.
  2. Choose or upload the .doc or .docx file.
  3. Start the conversion and wait for processing to finish.
  4. Download the generated .html file and open it in a browser. Check headings, links, tables, images, and non-Latin characters.

Using Microsoft Word desktop:

  1. Open the document in Word.
  2. Select File → Save As.
  3. Choose Web Page, Filtered (*.htm; *.html) when available, then save.
  4. Keep the HTML file with its accompanying image folder and other generated resources.

The filtered option usually creates less Word-specific markup than the unfiltered Web Page option, but both can produce inline styles, Microsoft-specific namespaces, fixed dimensions, and unnecessary CSS.

Using LibreOffice Writer: Open the document, select File → Save As, choose HTML Document (.html), select UTF-8 when the format dialog offers an encoding choice, and save. For repeatable local conversions, LibreOffice can run headlessly:

libreoffice --headless --convert-to html --outdir output document.docx

Check the output directory for the generated HTML filename and any exported image files. The exact output can vary with the LibreOffice version and the source document.

Quality and compatibility

  • Page breaks, margins, columns, floating shapes, text boxes, headers, footers, footnotes, tracked changes, and fields may be altered, flattened, or omitted because HTML does not reproduce Word’s pagination model.
  • Relative image references such as images/photo.png stop working if the supporting folder is renamed, moved, or separated from the HTML file.
  • Use UTF-8 and check for a declaration such as <meta charset="utf-8"> to preserve accented characters and non-Latin scripts.
  • For website publication, inspect the source and remove empty paragraphs, unnecessary inline styles, Microsoft-specific namespaces, and fixed-width table settings. Replace visual formatting with semantic headings, paragraphs, lists, and tables where appropriate.
  • Review hyperlinks, scripts, embedded objects, and external resources before uploading converted HTML. Conversion does not make those elements safe.
