How to convert txt to html file

A browser, website editor, or publishing system may require notes, logs, or exported data as an .html file instead of .txt. Conversion makes the text browser-readable, but headings, links, lists, and other structure must be added because plain text does not contain them.

What the TXT format is

TXT is a plain-text format containing characters without embedded styling, document structure, images, tables, or hyperlinks. Files commonly use the .txt extension and are created by Notepad, TextEdit in plain-text mode, Linux editors, command-line tools, scripts, and data-export functions.

Common uses include notes, configuration files, source-code snippets, logs, CSV-like data, email drafts, and archival records. A TXT file has a character encoding, such as UTF-8 or Windows-1252; choosing the wrong encoding can corrupt accented characters and non-Latin scripts.

What the HTML format is

HTML is a text-based markup format interpreted by web browsers and content-management systems. Elements such as <h1>, <p>, <a>, and <ul> define headings, paragraphs, links, and lists; CSS can define their appearance.

HTML provides searchable, editable document structure for web pages, browser-readable documentation, intranets, and email templates. It cannot recover formatting that was never present in the TXT source.

How to perform the conversion

  1. Use 101convert.com: open the site, select the TXT-to-HTML conversion, upload the .txt file, start the conversion, and download the resulting .html file. Review the result before publishing, particularly if the source contains confidential logs or personal data.
  2. Use Pandoc for repeatable conversions: install Pandoc, open a terminal in the folder containing the source file, and run pandoc input.txt -f plain -t html5 -o output.html. This treats blank-line-separated text as paragraphs but does not reliably infer headings, lists, or links from ordinary prose.
  3. Edit the HTML manually: create a file containing a document structure such as <!doctype html>, <html lang="en">, <head> with <meta charset="utf-8">, and <body>. Add <h1>, <p>, <ul>, and <a> elements as appropriate, paste in the text, save as output.html with UTF-8 encoding, and open it in a browser.

Renaming input.txt to input.html changes only the filename extension. It does not add HTML markup; the browser will display unmarked text with HTML whitespace rules, and source characters such as < may be interpreted as markup.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Encoding: interpret the source using its actual encoding and save the HTML as UTF-8. A mismatch can produce replacement characters such as or incorrectly decoded text.
  • Line breaks and spaces: browsers collapse consecutive spaces and ordinary line breaks inside a paragraph. Use separate <p> elements for paragraphs, <br> for intentional line breaks, or <pre> when every line break and space must remain visible.
  • Special characters: escape source characters that could be treated as markup: < becomes &lt;, > becomes &gt;, and & becomes &amp;. Conversion tools normally handle this when importing text, but manually inserted content must be checked.
  • Missing structure: a converter cannot know reliably which lines are titles, headings, list items, quotations, or links unless the source uses a recognized convention. Inspect and edit generated HTML when semantic structure matters.
  • Security: review links and markup before publishing. Do not insert untrusted text into a website without escaping or sanitizing it, and do not publish converted logs or user-submitted content without removing sensitive data.
