Convert PNG to RLE

Understanding PNG and RLE file formats

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a widely used raster image format known for its lossless compression and support for transparency. It is commonly used for web graphics, digital artwork, and images requiring high quality and transparency.

RLE (Run-Length Encoding) is not a specific file format but a compression technique used in various image formats, such as BMP or TIFF, to reduce file size by encoding consecutive repeated values. RLE-compressed files are often used in applications where simple, efficient compression is needed, such as in some legacy systems or embedded devices.

How to convert PNG to RLE

To convert a PNG image to an RLE-compressed file, you typically need to save the image in a format that supports RLE compression, such as BMP or TIFF, and select RLE as the compression method during export.

Best software for PNG to RLE conversion

IrfanView is a popular and free image viewer and converter that supports saving images in RLE-compressed BMP or TIFF formats. Here’s how to use it:

• Open your PNG file in IrfanView.
• Go to File → Save As.
• Select BMP or TIFF as the output format.
• In the save options, choose RLE compression.
• Click Save to complete the conversion.

Other alternatives include XnConvert and GIMP, both of which support exporting to RLE-compressed formats.

Tips for successful conversion

• Ensure your target application supports the specific RLE-compressed format you choose (BMP or TIFF).
• RLE works best with images containing large areas of uniform color.
• Always check the output file to confirm the compression method was applied correctly.
