Convert PNG to CRD

Some legacy or specialist software accepts only its own .crd file, so a PNG may need to be imported into that program before saving. In many requests, however, CRD is a typo for CorelDRAW’s .cdr format.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster image format used for screenshots, interface graphics, diagrams, logos, and images requiring transparency. It stores pixels with lossless compression and supports grayscale, RGB, and alpha transparency. Browsers, image editors, scanners, screenshot utilities, and design applications commonly create PNG files.

A PNG does not contain editable vector paths or separate text objects. Enlarging it cannot recreate those objects, and repeated PNG saves normally do not reduce image quality because the compression is lossless.

What the CRD format is

.crd has no single, universal image specification. Its best-known use is the legacy Windows Cardfile database format, which stores card records rather than standalone pictures. Other specialist applications use CRD for proprietary project, resource, credential, or design files.

Consequently, CRD has no general conversion advantage over PNG. A program-specific CRD may preserve that program’s editable data, settings, or record structure; a Windows Cardfile file organizes information into searchable cards, but it is not a general-purpose image container.

Identify the application that created the required CRD file from its documentation, the source of the file, or the operating system’s file properties. Do not rename image.png to image.crd: changing the extension does not change the internal format.

How to create a program-specific CRD file

1. Install or open the application that creates the required CRD files.
2. Choose its documented image command, such as File → Import or Insert → Image, and select the PNG.
3. Set placement, resolution, color mode, or transparency only where the application provides those options.
4. Choose File → Save As and select that application’s CRD type. If CRD is not available, the application cannot create the requested format.

For Windows Cardfile, create a card in compatible Cardfile software and transfer the relevant information. Insert or attach the PNG only if that particular implementation supports images or file attachments; otherwise, store the image separately and record its filename or location in the card.

If the target is CDR

.cdr, not .crd, is the native CorelDRAW document format. In CorelDRAW, choose File → Import, select the PNG, place it on the page, and use File → Save As with CDR as the output type. CorelDRAW is the most reliable desktop option for writing a native CDR file.

Inkscape can import the PNG and save an SVG, but it is not a dependable native CDR writer. Online services such as CloudConvert and Convertio may provide PNG-to-CDR conversion when that output is listed; upload the file, choose CDR, run the conversion, and inspect the downloaded result in CorelDRAW or another compatible viewer. Service support changes, and confidential images should not be uploaded without an appropriate privacy agreement.

Quality and compatibility limits

Putting a PNG into a CRD or CDR document preserves the raster pixels but does not make the image vector-editable. For editable artwork, trace it with CorelDRAW PowerTRACE or Inkscape’s Path → Trace Bitmap, then inspect and simplify the resulting paths. Automatic tracing can add excessive nodes, distort edges, and reproduce text or gradients poorly.

Keep the original PNG because export or import can remove transparency, embedded color profiles, metadata, or editability. Use the source image at its intended physical size for print work; increasing its DPI during import changes the stated resolution but adds no detail.
