Older Samsung phonebook backups often need conversion before contacts can be imported into Google Contacts, Apple Contacts, or a replacement phone. A .vcf file is the practical transfer format because it stores contacts independently of the original Samsung backup software.
What an SPB file is
SPB is not a universal file format. In this context, it usually denotes a proprietary Samsung phonebook backup created by legacy Samsung software, commonly Samsung Kies, Kies 2, or Samsung PC Studio. The exact structure varies by program version and phone model, so an SPB file normally cannot be opened or converted reliably by generic contact utilities.
Other unrelated programs also use the .spb extension. Confirm that the file came from Samsung contact-backup software before attempting recovery; a non-Samsung SPB file will not be usable in Kies or PC Studio.
What a VCF file is
VCF, or vCard, is a text-based contact-exchange format. One .vcf file can contain one contact or many contacts and can preserve common fields such as names, phone numbers, email addresses, addresses, and notes.
Google Contacts, Samsung Contacts, Apple Contacts, Thunderbird, and many address-book applications can import VCF files. vCard 3.0 is usually the safest choice when an export tool offers a version selector; vCard 4.0 can retain newer fields but is less consistently supported by older applications.
Convert the backup locally
The reliable method is to use the Samsung application that created the backup, restore its contacts, and export them as vCard. Samsung Kies and Samsung PC Studio are legacy Windows applications; install the matching version from Samsung support resources where available, and use an older Windows installation or compatibility environment if the software will not run on a current PC.
- Copy the SPB file and retain the original unchanged. If it came from a backup folder, keep the complete folder because some backup sets use companion files or metadata.
- Identify the originating software from the backup folder name, old installer, phone model, or documentation. Try Samsung Kies or Kies 2 for a Kies backup; use Samsung PC Studio only if that was the software used to create it.
- In the original software, use its restore or import function rather than trying to open the SPB file as a document. Restore only the contacts if that option is available.
- If the program displays the restored contacts, use its contact export command and select vCard, VCF, or vCard 3.0. Save the result as
contacts.vcf. - If the old Samsung software can restore contacts but cannot export VCF, restore them to a compatible Samsung phone. In Samsung Contacts, use Menu → Manage contacts → Import or export contacts → Export; menu names vary by Android version. Export to device storage as a VCF file.
- As an alternative after restoration, synchronize the contacts to a Google account, open Google Contacts in a browser, select the contacts, and choose Export → vCard. Google may label this option vCard (for iOS Contacts), but it produces a standard VCF file.
There is no generally reputable web converter to recommend for proprietary Samsung phonebook SPB files. Do not upload one to an unknown conversion site: contact backups can contain phone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, notes, and other personal data, and most such services cannot document correct support for the Samsung variant.
Check the exported contacts
Test contacts.vcf with a small import into a separate Google Contacts label or another non-production address book before merging it with a main contact list. A text editor should show repeated blocks beginning with BEGIN:VCARD and ending with END:VCARD.
Check contacts with multiple phone numbers, international dialing prefixes, non-Latin names, email addresses, notes, and groups. Contact photos, custom ringtones, SIM-storage flags, call history, and Samsung-specific fields do not have dependable VCF equivalents and may be omitted.
Microsoft Outlook support for a multi-contact VCF file varies by Outlook edition and version; Google Contacts or Apple Contacts is usually a better validation target. If an importing application shows garbled names or treats every record as one contact, re-export as vCard 3.0 where possible rather than editing the original SPB file.
This file conversion has been marked as obsolete. No dedicated converter or free online tool is available, or one of the formats is very old and has been replaced by newer versions, making this type of conversion unnecessary in modern usage.
