Convert VEF to VCF

An older HTC phone may store its contact backup as a .vef file, while a replacement phone, email client, or address book usually expects .vcf (vCard). The conversion normally requires restoring the backup in its original HTC application or exporting it through an intermediate contact format.

What the VEF format is

VEF is an ambiguous file extension, not one standardized contact format. Older HTC Android devices and the HTC People application use VEF for proprietary contact backups, but other programs use the extension for unrelated binary data, including voice recordings and application-specific files.

Identify the device or application that created the file before attempting conversion. On macOS, Linux, or Windows with WSL, file filename.vef may reveal a recognized file type. Opening a copy with a text editor can also show readable CSV, XML, or JSON headers, but unreadable binary content does not prove that the file contains contacts.

Some HTC backups are password-protected, depending on the device and backup settings. The password cannot be removed by changing the extension or importing the file into a different contact program.

What the VCF format is

VCF is the common filename extension for vCard, a text-based contact-exchange format. A file can contain one or many records with fields such as FN for the display name, N for structured name components, TEL for phone numbers, EMAIL, ORG, ADR, and NOTE. Photos and other binary data can be embedded as encoded text.

Apple Contacts, Google Contacts, Outlook, Thunderbird, Android, iOS, and many other address-book applications can import VCF. Use vCard 3.0 for most current and older-device transfers; use vCard 2.1 only when a particularly old phone requires it. vCard 4.0 supports newer features but is less compatible with legacy software.

How to convert an HTC VEF backup

1. Make a backup copy of the original .vef file. Do not rename or edit the only copy.
2. Copy the file to a compatible HTC phone or restore it through the HTC software that created it. On many HTC People versions, the relevant command is People → Menu → Import/Export → Import from storage; menu names vary by Android and Sense version.
3. Enter the backup password if requested. If the original device or compatible HTC application cannot open the file, a generic converter usually cannot recover its contacts.
4. After restoration, export the contacts as vCard if the People application offers an export command, commonly under People → Menu → Import/Export → Export to storage.
5. If direct export is unavailable, synchronize the restored contacts with a Google account. Open Google Contacts in a browser, select the contacts or contact group, choose Export, and select vCard. This produces a .vcf file that can be downloaded and imported elsewhere.

Google Contacts is a practical online route only after the HTC backup has been restored or converted into contacts. Do not upload a private VEF backup to an unrelated website; Google’s import and export tools handle standard CSV and VCF, not arbitrary proprietary VEF files.

How to convert another contact-based VEF

If the originating program can open the file, use its documented export command, such as File → Export → vCard or Export → VCF. If it exports CSV or tab-delimited text instead, import that file into Mozilla Thunderbird’s address book, map the name, telephone, email, and address columns, then use the address book’s Tools → Export command to create a VCF file.

A readable, tabular VEF can also be imported into a spreadsheet first, but save it as UTF-8 CSV and preserve separate columns for multiple phone numbers and email addresses. Do not simply rename filename.vef to filename.vcf; the extension changes, but the internal structure does not.

When conversion is impossible

A VEF containing voice data, a proprietary project, or an encrypted database is not a vCard. A voice recording that mentions contact details must be transcribed and entered manually; it cannot be converted into structured TEL and EMAIL fields automatically by a format change.

CloudConvert, Zamzar, and similar online converters should be used only if their current input list explicitly supports the exact VEF variant. Acceptance of an upload does not demonstrate that the service understands the file; it may reject, misinterpret, or merely rename it. No dependable universal VEF-to-VCF converter exists because VEF has no single specification.

Quality and compatibility checks

Open the generated file in a text editor and confirm that each record begins with BEGIN:VCARD and ends with END:VCARD. Test a copy in the destination application and check names, international numbers in +countrycode form, accented characters, duplicate contacts, multiple phone numbers, groups, notes, and photographs.

CSV-based conversion commonly loses contact groups, photos, custom labels, timestamps, and some notes. VCF support for those fields varies by application and vCard version, so retain the original VEF and the restored contact database until the imported records have been verified.
