Legacy accounting, reporting, or document-management software may require an Excel .xls workbook and reject a native Quattro Pro file. Converting the workbook makes its spreadsheet data available to Excel-compatible applications while leaving the original .qpw file unchanged.

What the QPW format is

.qpw is the native workbook format of Corel Quattro Pro, included in WordPerfect Office. It can contain worksheets, formulas, formatting, charts, named ranges, external links, and other Quattro Pro spreadsheet objects. QPW files are most common in organizations using WordPerfect Office and in older spreadsheet archives.

What the XLS format is

.xls is Microsoft Excel's binary workbook format for Excel 97–2003. Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, and many older reporting, accounting, and document-management systems can open it. Its main advantage is compatibility with software that does not support Quattro Pro or the newer .xlsx format.

XLS supports a maximum of 65,536 rows and 256 columns per worksheet. It also supports fewer modern Excel features than XLSX, so use XLS when the receiving application specifically requires it or cannot accept XLSX.

How to convert a QPW file to XLS

Corel Quattro Pro is the preferred desktop method because it reads the workbook in its native format before exporting it.

1. Open the .qpw file in Quattro Pro. A version compatible with the workbook's originating release may provide the best results.
2. Inspect worksheets, formulas, charts, named ranges, external links, print areas, and unusual formatting before saving.
3. Choose File → Save As.
4. In the file-type list, select Microsoft Excel 97–2003 Workbook (*.xls), Excel 97/2000/2003, or the equivalent XLS option shown by your version.
5. Enter a new filename ending in .xls, select the destination, and save the file.
6. Confirm the format-compatibility warning if Quattro Pro displays one.
7. Open the exported workbook in Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice Calc and compare formulas, totals, dates, number formats, sheet order, charts, print areas, and page breaks with the original.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion can change Quattro Pro-specific formulas, macros, charts, conditional formatting, fonts, print settings, external references, and unsupported workbook objects. A formula without a direct Excel equivalent may become a different formula, a fixed value, or an error. Basic cell values, ordinary formulas, and common formatting generally transfer more reliably than advanced objects and application-specific features.

Check every worksheet after conversion and recalculate or compare important totals against the QPW original. If a worksheet exceeds the XLS row or column limits, data may be truncated or split; use .xlsx instead when the destination supports it. XLSX is not an alternative when a legacy system accepts only XLS.

Do not rename .qpw to .xls; changing the extension does not change the internal workbook format. Keep the original QPW file because saving or exporting to XLS does not preserve every Quattro Pro feature.
