Convert WR1 to XLS

Legacy WR1 files often need conversion because current spreadsheet software may not open them, while recipients commonly require an Excel workbook for editing or reporting. Converting the data to XLS also makes it usable in older office environments that cannot read XLSX.

What the WR1 format is

WR1 is a legacy worksheet format associated with Lotus Symphony, the discontinued Lotus office suite, and is sometimes described in conversion catalogs as a Lotus 1-2-3-compatible spreadsheet. It is found mainly in archived business, accounting, and DOS-era office records. Depending on the originating version, a WR1 file can contain cell values, formulas, formatting, and basic worksheet layout.

WR1 is not a modern interchange standard, and many current spreadsheet applications do not provide dependable native support. The extension alone does not prove which Lotus product created the file, so identify the source application or test a copy before converting the original.

What the XLS format is

XLS is Microsoft Excel's binary workbook format, used primarily by Excel 97–2003 and supported by Excel, LibreOffice Calc, and other compatible spreadsheet programs. Unlike CSV, XLS can retain multiple worksheets, formulas, cell formatting, charts, column widths, and basic print settings.

Each XLS worksheet is limited to 65,536 rows and 256 columns. Use XLSX instead if the converted data exceeds those limits or requires newer Excel features, but choose XLS when the recipient or destination system specifically requires the older format.

How to convert WR1 to XLS

Use the original Lotus software

The original Lotus environment is the best first option because it can interpret the WR1 file's native structure. Use an archived installation in its original computer environment, a suitable virtual machine, or a properly configured DOS emulator when necessary.

1. Make a backup of the WR1 file and work on the copy.
2. Open the file in Lotus Symphony or the Lotus-compatible application that created it through File → Open. If the program does not show the file, select an all-files view and choose the appropriate worksheet type.
3. Inspect formulas, dates, number formats, totals, hidden rows and columns, and sheet layout.
4. Use File → Save As or File → Export. Select an Excel 97–2003, Microsoft Excel, or .xls output option if the installed version provides one.
5. Open the result in Excel or LibreOffice Calc and compare important values with the original.

Some old Lotus versions cannot write XLS directly. In that case, export the worksheet to .csv or another format that a modern spreadsheet can import, then open it in Calc or Excel and choose File → Save As → Excel 97–2003 (*.xls). CSV preserves separated cell values but normally loses formulas, formatting, multiple sheets, charts, and print settings.

Try a desktop converter

A dedicated utility such as ABC Amber Lotus Converter can be useful when its installed version explicitly lists .wr1 as an input format and XLS as an output format. Select the WR1 file, choose Microsoft Excel or XLS as the destination, convert a copy, and inspect the resulting workbook. Do not assume that support for .wk1, .wk3, or .wk4 also means support for WR1; those are different Lotus worksheet formats.

LibreOffice Calc and Gnumeric can import some Lotus worksheet variants, but WR1 recognition varies by version and platform. Try File → Open on a copy and confirm that the application identifies the file rather than treating it as plain text. If the result is empty, garbled, or missing sheets, use the original Lotus software or a converter that names WR1 specifically. Renaming .wr1 to .xls changes only the filename and does not convert the binary data.

Use an online converter cautiously

Services such as Zamzar or CloudConvert can be considered only if their current format lists explicitly accept .wr1 and provide XLS output. Upload a small nonconfidential test file first, download the result, and compare formulas and totals. Do not upload payroll, customer, financial, or proprietary records unless the service's data handling is acceptable; legacy binary files may be rejected or converted with substantial data loss.

Quality and compatibility checks

Verify formulas because obsolete Lotus functions, range syntax, macros, named ranges, protection settings, and print controls may have no direct XLS equivalent. Check date serials, decimal separators, currency formats, leading zeros, negative values, and text that resembles numbers.

Compare row counts and key totals, inspect every worksheet, and check charts, hidden content, merged cells, column widths, and page setup. Keep the original WR1 file unchanged, and retain an exported CSV or PDF reference when the conversion is needed for archival purposes rather than further calculation.
