How to convert 123 to xls file

A legacy accounting system, older Excel installation, or recipient may accept an Excel .xls workbook but not a Lotus 1-2-3 .123 file. Converting the spreadsheet makes its tables and formulas available to compatible office software while retaining the original for verification.

What the 123 format is

.123 is a spreadsheet document format associated with Lotus 1-2-3, developed by Lotus Development Corporation and later distributed by IBM. It can contain worksheets, cell values, formulas, labels, formatting, charts, print settings, named ranges, and Lotus-specific macros.

Files commonly occur in DOS- and Windows-era accounting, inventory, financial, scheduling, survey, and archive collections. Older Lotus releases also used other extensions, so confirm that the file is a Lotus spreadsheet; renaming an unrelated file to .123 does not convert it.

What the XLS format is

.xls is Microsoft's binary Excel workbook format, used primarily by Excel 97 through Excel 2003 and still supported by many later spreadsheet applications. It supports multiple worksheets, formulas, formatting, charts, print settings, and some macro content.

XLS is appropriate when a recipient or legacy business system specifically requires Excel 97–2003 format. It is not the preferred format for new workbooks: .xlsx supports newer Excel features and larger worksheets. An XLS worksheet is limited to 65,536 rows and 256 columns; a source exceeding either limit must be split or saved in a newer format.

How to convert 123 to XLS

Using the converter on 101convert.com

  1. Open the 123-to-XLS converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Select the source file, such as sales.123.
  3. Choose XLS as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting .xls file and open it in Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice Calc.

The conversion can be performed on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Do not upload payroll, financial, personal, regulated, or proprietary data unless the site's file-handling policy permits online processing.

Using LibreOffice Calc

  1. Make a backup of the original .123 file and open LibreOffice Calc.
  2. Select File → Open, choose the file, and accept the detected Lotus import filter. If Calc reports an unknown format or opens an empty workbook, the file may use an unsupported Lotus variant or have an incorrect extension.
  3. Compare representative sheets, formulas, dates, totals, number formats, column widths, hidden rows, charts, and print areas with the source.
  4. Select File → Save As, choose Excel 97–2003 (*.xls), and save to a new filename.
  5. Accept the compatibility warning, reopen the saved .xls, and verify it in the spreadsheet software used by the recipient.

For simple files, LibreOffice can also convert from a command line:

soffice --headless --convert-to xls --outdir converted input.123

The graphical method is preferable for important workbooks because it allows inspection before and after export. Microsoft Excel may open some Lotus files directly, but support depends on the Excel version and the particular Lotus format. If the original Lotus 1-2-3 installation is available, its File → Save As or File → Export command may preserve Lotus-specific structures better; available Excel export options vary by release.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Lotus formulas can use different function names, range syntax, date rules, and error behavior. Recalculate important formulas and compare key totals rather than assuming that a successful export preserves mathematical results.
  • Lotus macros are not reliably converted to Excel VBA. They may be removed or disabled and may require manual rewriting; retain the original if automation matters.
  • Charts, print layouts, page breaks, fonts, merged cells, conditional formatting, named ranges, embedded objects, and column widths can change during import or XLS export.
  • Check dates, decimal separators, and accented or non-Latin text. Legacy encodings and regional settings can alter displayed labels or numeric values.
  • An XLS file cannot represent a worksheet larger than 65,536 rows by 256 columns. Split oversized sheets or use .xlsx when the receiving system allows it.
  • Keep the original .123, the converted .xls, and a verification copy opened in the recipient's software.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 123 to XLS converter free?

Yes, converting 123 to XLS on 101convert.com is completely free. No registration, email address or installation is required. If you need a higher file size limit or want to convert more files at once, see our plans.

How large can my 123 file be?

You can upload 123 files up to 1000 MB and convert up to 100 files at once in a single batch.

What happens to my uploaded files?

Files are processed automatically and deleted from our servers within a few minutes after conversion. We never view or share your files.

Do I need to install any software to convert 123 to XLS?

No. The 123 to XLS conversion runs entirely online in your browser and works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.

Did the conversion fail?

In most cases, the cause is an incorrect file format. Please upload a valid 123 file for this 123 to XLS conversion. Occasionally, the issue may be on our side. We analyze recurring conversion failures and disable or fix the converter if we detect a defect.

Are Lotus 1-2-3 .123 formulas preserved when converted to .xls?

Many basic formulas are converted, but Lotus 1-2-3 syntax, functions, and range references that have no direct Excel equivalent may change or produce errors. Check calculated results rather than assuming every formula remains identical.

Will my .123 spreadsheet layout and formatting stay the same in .xls?

The main cell layout and common formatting usually carry over, but specialized Lotus 1-2-3 formatting, print settings, charts, and unsupported objects may be flattened, altered, or omitted. Review page breaks, column widths, and displayed dates after conversion.

Can an .xls file contain every row and column from my .123 spreadsheet?

Not always, because legacy .xls files are limited to 65,536 rows and 256 columns. Data beyond those limits must be truncated or handled separately during conversion.

Why do some .123 formulas show errors after conversion to .xls?

This usually happens when a formula uses Lotus 1-2-3 functions, separators, references, or date handling that differs from Excel's older formula rules. Unsupported formulas may be converted to error values or text and need manual correction.
