A 7Z file may contain contact cards that a phone, email client, or address-book application requires as VCF files. Because 7Z is an archive and VCF is a contact-data format, the usual operation is to extract the VCF rather than convert the archive itself.

What the 7Z format is

7Z is a compressed archive format created by 7-Zip. It stores one or more files inside a container and can reduce their size using compression, encryption, and solid archiving.

You typically encounter .7z files when contacts have been bundled for download, backup, transfer, or long-term storage. 7-Zip, p7zip, and compatible archive utilities can create or open them.

What the VCF format is

VCF, also called vCard, stores contact records such as names, telephone numbers, email addresses, organization details, postal addresses, notes, and sometimes photographs. Files normally use the .vcf extension and contain one or more BEGIN:VCARD records.

Phones, email clients, desktop address books, and contact-management applications commonly import VCF. It is more suitable than an archive for editing or importing contacts because each application can read the structured fields directly.

How to actually convert 7Z to VCF

When the 7Z already contains a VCF

  1. Install 7-Zip or another application that supports 7Z archives.
  2. Open the archive and check its contents for files ending in .vcf. There may be one contact file or several separate files.
  3. In 7-Zip, select the VCF files and choose Extract, or run 7z x contacts.7z -oextracted.
  4. Open the extracted VCF with the destination application and use its contact import command, such as Import contacts or File → Import.

The extracted file is already a VCF; renaming the .7z extension to .vcf does not perform a conversion and will not make the contents readable as contacts.

When the archive contains another contact format

Extract the archive first, then convert the contained data with an application that understands its actual format. For example, import a CSV contact list into Thunderbird or another address-book program, map the name and contact fields, and use its Export → vCard command to create .vcf.

If you do not want to install software, you can use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing anything. The service can only produce a valid VCF when the archive contains VCF data or a supported contact format; it cannot infer contact records from arbitrary files.

Quality and compatibility considerations

Check the VCF version required by the destination device. vCard 3.0 is widely compatible, while vCard 4.0 supports newer features but may fail in older phone and desktop software.

After importing, verify non-ASCII names, accented characters, telephone numbers, multiple email addresses, photos, and line breaks. Incorrect character encoding or field mapping can change contact data even when the archive extracted correctly.

If the archive contains several VCF files, import them individually unless the target program explicitly supports a multi-contact VCF. Do not edit a VCF in a word processor, because it may alter required line endings, escaping, or encoding.
