A .spbm file is often found inside an old Samsung backup when contacts must be moved to Google Contacts, iCloud, a new phone, or an offline address-book archive. Those services use .vcf vCard files, not Samsung’s proprietary backup data.
What SPBM files contain
SPBM is a Samsung phonebook-backup format used by Samsung desktop backup software, including Kies- and Smart Switch-era backup sets; some older Samsung phone-management tools may also use related phonebook data. It stores contacts in a proprietary binary structure rather than as standard vCards.
An SPBM file is commonly one component of a larger backup folder. The folder can also contain device information, indexes, account data, and other files required by the Samsung program to recognize and restore the contacts. Keep the complete original backup folder; an isolated .spbm file may not be enough to restore data.
Why export to VCF
VCF is the extension for vCard contact files. One .vcf file can hold one contact or many contacts and can be imported by Android and Apple Contacts applications, Google Contacts, iCloud Contacts, and many mail and contact-management programs.
VCF preserves standard fields such as names, telephone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, and notes more portably than a Samsung backup. Use the version produced by the exporting program; vCard 3.0 is widely accepted, while vCard 2.1 can help with older devices that reject newer files.
Restore first, then export
There is no broadly reliable standalone SPBM-to-VCF converter. The practical method is to restore the backup with the Samsung software that created it, then export the restored contacts from the phone or contact application.
- Copy the entire Samsung backup folder to another drive before attempting a restore.
- Identify the backup source from its folder name, date, and accompanying files. Use Samsung Smart Switch for a Smart Switch backup; use Samsung Kies or the original Samsung utility if that is what created the backup.
- Install the matching software on Windows and place the backup where that program expects backups, or use its documented backup-restore location. Do not rely on an Open command for the individual
.spbmfile; many versions recognize only a complete backup set. - Connect a compatible Samsung device and run the restore operation. If available, select Contacts only. Back up contacts already on the destination phone first, because a restore can merge records or replace local data.
- On the restored phone, open Contacts and use Menu → Manage contacts → Import or export contacts → Export. Menu labels vary by One UI and Android version. Save the exported file as, for example,
contacts.vcf. - Import the VCF into the destination. Google Contacts provides Import → Select file; iCloud Contacts provides Import vCard. Android Contacts usually offers Fix & manage → Import from file.
If the original Samsung desktop program displays the restored address book and explicitly offers vCard export, that export can replace the phone-restoration step. Samsung PC Studio is relevant only when it is confirmed as the software that created the backup; it is obsolete and may require an older or virtualized Windows installation.
Do not rename .spbm to .vcf. Changing a filename extension does not convert the data. Avoid unknown online conversion sites: contact backups contain names, numbers, email addresses, and possibly notes, and no established reputable web converter is known for SPBM files.
Check the exported contacts
Open the resulting VCF in a text editor. Each contact should normally be enclosed by BEGIN:VCARD and END:VCARD. Import it into a test account before merging it with a primary address book.
Names, numbers, and email addresses usually survive a restore-and-export cycle, but groups, custom number labels, photos, ringtones, linked accounts, and device-specific fields may not. Check contacts with multiple numbers, non-Latin names, international prefixes, and notes. If an importer rejects a large file, export smaller batches from the contact application or use its available vCard 2.1 option rather than manually editing vCard lines.
