Convert SPBM to CSV

A spreadsheet, CRM, or data-import service may require contacts in CSV instead of a Samsung backup. An SPBM file normally must be restored through Samsung software first, then exported as contacts and converted to CSV.

What the SPBM format is

In Samsung backup workflows, .spbm commonly identifies proprietary Samsung phonebook or contact-backup data associated with Samsung Kies or Smart Switch. The file is usually part of a backup set rather than a self-contained, documented interchange file, and compatibility depends on the Samsung software version, phone model, and backup structure.

SPBM is not a standard table format. Renaming contacts.spbm to contacts.csv changes only the filename extension; it does not decode the records. If the file did not come from a Samsung backup, identify the program or device that created it before attempting conversion, because an extension alone does not establish a file format.

What the CSV format is

CSV is plain text containing rows and fields separated by commas, semicolons, tabs, or another delimiter. Spreadsheet applications, databases, CRM systems, scripts, and many import services support it, making CSV suitable for moving a flat contact list between programs.

CSV does not preserve a Samsung backup's restore information, device settings, account relationships, attachments, photos, call history, or other application-specific data. Values containing delimiters, quotation marks, or line breaks must be quoted according to the receiving program's CSV rules.

How to convert a Samsung SPBM backup

1. Keep the complete backup. Make a copy of the original SPBM file and retain its surrounding backup folder and metadata. Do not edit or rename the original.
2. Identify the Samsung program that created it. Try the same or a compatible version of Samsung Smart Switch or the legacy Samsung Kies application. A standalone SPBM file may not be usable without the rest of the backup set.
3. Restore the backup. In Smart Switch, connect a compatible Samsung phone and use Restore, selecting the backup recognized by the program. In Kies, use the program's restore or contact-management function if it recognizes the backup. Kies is discontinued, so installation and compatibility with current operating systems are limited; use it only with a copy of the backup and a compatible environment.
4. Export the restored contacts as VCF. On the phone, open the Contacts application and use its Manage contacts → Import or export contacts → Export command, or export the contacts from the synchronized account. Menu names vary by Android and One UI version. VCF, also called vCard, is the normal contact interchange format; SPBM generally has no supported direct CSV export.
5. Convert VCF to CSV. For a desktop option, import the VCF into Thunderbird's address book or another reputable contact manager, then use its address-book export command and select CSV. For an online option, import the VCF into Google Contacts and use Export → Google CSV; this uploads contact data to Google, so do not use it for confidential contacts unless that handling is acceptable.

Online services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar may be used for the intermediate VCF file only when their current format list explicitly supports VCF input and CSV output. Do not upload an SPBM file to a service unless it explicitly documents SPBM support; a generic file-conversion site cannot infer an undocumented Samsung backup structure. Check the provider's privacy and deletion policies before uploading contacts.

Quality and compatibility limits

Inspect the CSV in a text editor as well as a spreadsheet. Confirm the expected number of contacts, UTF-8 encoding, delimiter, header names, and correct handling of accented characters. During import, set telephone numbers, postal codes, contact IDs, and other leading-zero values to text so spreadsheet software does not alter them.

Compare the restored contact count with the CSV row count and test contacts containing multiple phone numbers, multiple email addresses, empty fields, commas, quotation marks, non-ASCII characters, and line breaks. A converter may place secondary numbers or email addresses in separate columns, combine them into one field, or create multiple rows.

If Smart Switch or Kies cannot recognize the backup, the file may require the original backup version, its complete folder structure, or an older Samsung device. A hex editor or strings command cannot reliably recover fields from proprietary binary data; obtain the matching Samsung software or a documented vendor-supported recovery tool instead.
