How to convert vcard to csv file

Many CRM systems, mailing tools, spreadsheets, and databases require contacts as a table rather than as address cards. Converting a .vcf address book produces editable rows for bulk import, review, or archiving while preserving the original contact file for recovery.

What the VCARD format is

VCARD, usually stored with the .vcf extension, is a structured format for contact cards. Phones, email clients, and address-book applications use it to store names, organizations, job titles, telephone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, URLs, notes, birthdays, photos, and other properties.

A file may contain one card exported from a device or many cards from an entire address book. Common versions include vCard 2.1, 3.0, and 4.0. The version and the exporting application affect property names, character encoding, line folding, and supported fields.

What the CSV format is

CSV, or comma-separated values, stores tabular data as rows and columns. A contact CSV commonly has one row per person and columns such as Full name, Organization, Phone, Email, Street, City, and Postal code.

Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, CRM platforms, bulk-mailing systems, databases, and scripts commonly accept CSV. It is plain text and easy to edit or process, but it has no universal contact schema. A CSV may therefore omit or flatten vCard features such as photos, categories, multiple typed addresses, relationships, and custom properties.

How to convert the file

Using 101convert.com

  1. Open the VCF to CSV converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Select or drag the .vcf file into the converter. A file containing multiple cards should be submitted as one file so each card can become a separate CSV row.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .csv file. The conversion is available without installing software.
  4. Open the CSV in Excel, LibreOffice Calc, or another spreadsheet. If an import dialog appears, select UTF-8 and the delimiter used by the output, normally a comma. Some regional spreadsheet settings use semicolons instead.
  5. Inspect several records before importing them into another system, including names with accents, phone numbers, addresses, line breaks, and records with multiple email addresses or telephone numbers.

Online conversion requires uploading the contact file, so use a local method instead when the address book contains confidential data or organizational information that must remain on the device.

Using a local Python script

For private data or repeatable batch conversion, install the open-source vobject parser:

python -m pip install vobject

Save this as vcf_to_csv.py:

import csv
import sys
import vobject

def value(card, name):
    item = getattr(card, name, None)
    return item.value if item else ""

def values(card, name):
    return "; ".join(item.value for item in getattr(card, name + "_list", []))

with open(sys.argv[1], encoding="utf-8-sig") as source, open(
    sys.argv[2], "w", newline="", encoding="utf-8-sig"
) as output:
    fields = ["full_name", "organization", "phone", "email", "street", "city", "region", "postal_code", "country"]
    writer = csv.DictWriter(output, fieldnames=fields)
    writer.writeheader()

    for card in vobject.readComponents(source):
        address = getattr(card, "adr", None)
        adr = address.value if address else None
        writer.writerow({
            "full_name": value(card, "fn"),
            "organization": value(card, "org"),
            "phone": values(card, "tel"),
            "email": values(card, "email"),
            "street": adr.street if adr else "",
            "city": adr.city if adr else "",
            "region": adr.region if adr else "",
            "postal_code": adr.code if adr else "",
            "country": adr.country if adr else ""
        })

Run the script with the input and output filenames:

python vcf_to_csv.py contacts.vcf contacts.csv

This example combines multiple telephone numbers and email addresses in one cell and exports the first postal address. Extend the field list and extraction logic if the destination system requires separate columns for mobile, work, and home values.

Quality and compatibility limits

VCARD properties can contain folded lines, quoted-printable or UTF-8 text, escaped commas and semicolons, parameters such as TEL;TYPE=CELL, and repeated fields. Use a parser-based converter; replacing commas or semicolons directly can corrupt names, addresses, notes, and phone data.

CSV cannot preserve every vCard property. Photos, categories, notes with line breaks, custom fields, multiple addresses, and type labels may be discarded or combined. Keep the original .vcf file until the CSV has been verified and imported successfully.

When opening the result in a spreadsheet, import phone-number columns as text so leading zeros, plus signs, and extensions remain intact. Check fields beginning with =, +, -, or @ before opening untrusted data in a spreadsheet, because some applications may interpret them as formulas rather than contact text.
