How to convert brd to stp file

Source format: BRD

BRD is a file extension used by several PCB design tools, most commonly Autodesk EAGLE, and in some cases other electronics CAD systems. A BRD file usually contains the physical layout of a printed circuit board: component placement, copper traces, vias, board outline, and related design data. Because the extension is not tied to one universal standard, the exact contents depend on the software that created it.

Important: BRD files are usually best opened and converted in the same PCB software that created them.

Target format: STP

STP or STEP is a widely used 3D CAD exchange format defined by ISO standards. It is commonly used to share mechanical models between CAD systems and to exchange board-related 3D data with mechanical engineers, enclosure designers, and manufacturers.

For PCB work, STEP is typically used to export a 3D representation of the board and its components so the design can be checked in a mechanical CAD tool or placed into an enclosure model.

How to convert brd to stp

Important: A direct BRD-to-STEP conversion is only possible if the PCB software can generate a 3D model from the board data. In many cases, this is an export from the original PCB CAD program rather than a standalone file conversion.

Best desktop option: Autodesk EAGLE or Fusion 360

  1. Open the .brd file in EAGLE or the PCB environment that created it.
  2. Check that the board uses correct footprint and 3D package data if you need an accurate mechanical model.
  3. Use the program’s STEP export function, commonly found under File → Export → STEP or a similar 3D export command.
  4. Save the output as .stp or .step.
  5. Open the exported file in a CAD viewer or mechanical CAD system to verify board outline, component height, and orientation.

Alternative desktop tools

  • KiCad: If the design has been imported into KiCad or was created there originally, use the 3D viewer and File → Export → STEP to create a STEP model.
  • Altium Designer: Open the PCB document and use its 3D export features to save a STEP assembly.
  • FreeCAD: FreeCAD can be useful for viewing or working with STEP files, but it is not a general-purpose BRD-to-STEP converter. It does not reliably import arbitrary BRD files for direct STEP export.

Online converters

Reputable online conversion services are usually not the best choice for BRD to STP because PCB files may be proprietary and can contain sensitive design data. If you must use an online service, confirm that it supports your specific BRD dialect and that your design is not confidential. In practice, desktop PCB software is safer and more reliable.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

  • BRD is not universal: different PCB tools may use the same extension for different internal formats, so the correct workflow depends on the source application.
  • STEP is mechanical, not electrical: the exported file will not preserve nets, rules, copper layers, or schematic connectivity.
  • 3D accuracy depends on library data: component height, body shape, and orientation are only as accurate as the footprint and 3D package definitions in the PCB library.
  • Missing models may be simplified: if a component has no 3D model, the export may substitute a placeholder or omit detail.
  • Units and orientation matter: check board origin, axis direction, and component rotation after export to avoid fit issues in enclosure design.

For the most reliable BRD to STP conversion, use the original PCB design software that created the BRD file and export a STEP model directly from there.
