Understanding SLP and STP file formats

SLP files are typically associated with Slic3r or other 3D printing software, representing 3D model slice data used for preparing objects for 3D printing. These files contain information about each layer of a 3D print, but do not store full 3D geometry in a standard CAD format.

STP (or STEP) files, on the other hand, are ISO-standard 3D CAD files used for exchanging 3D models between different CAD programs. They store complete 3D geometry, assemblies, and metadata, making them ideal for engineering and manufacturing workflows.

How to convert SLP to STP

Direct conversion from SLP to STP is not straightforward, as SLP files do not contain the full 3D geometry required for a STEP file. Instead, you must first obtain the original 3D model (usually in STL or OBJ format) that was sliced to create the SLP file. Once you have the original 3D model, you can convert it to STP using CAD software.

Recommended software for conversion

• FreeCAD: Open the original 3D model (e.g., STL), use Part → Create shape from mesh, then Part → Export and choose STEP format.
• Autodesk Fusion 360: Import the STL file, convert the mesh to a solid body, then use File → Export and select STEP as the output format.
• Online converters: Some online tools like CAD Exchanger or AnyConv can convert STL to STP, but always ensure your data privacy.

Step-by-step conversion process

1. Locate the original 3D model file (STL or OBJ) used to generate the SLP file.
2. Open the model in FreeCAD or Fusion 360.
3. Convert the mesh to a solid body if necessary.
4. Use Export and select STEP or STP as the output format.

Important notes

• SLP files alone cannot be converted to STP without the original 3D geometry.
• Always keep a copy of your original 3D model files for future conversions.
