A CRYPT12 backup must be decrypted and rendered before it can be shared, printed, edited, or archived as a PDF. PDF preserves a readable transcript, but it cannot open or interpret the encrypted WhatsApp database directly.
What the CRYPT12 format is
msgstore.db.crypt12 is a legacy encrypted WhatsApp database backup created mainly by WhatsApp for Android. It contains message records and references to media; it is not a document and cannot be opened by PDF software. Newer WhatsApp installations commonly use CRYPT14 or CRYPT15 instead.
CRYPT12 files are commonly found in Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Databases on newer Android versions or WhatsApp/Databases on older installations. Decryption requires the matching WhatsApp key, historically stored in the app's private data directory at a path such as /data/data/com.whatsapp/files/key. Modern Android security may require root access or an authorized extraction method, and a database without its matching key is normally unusable.
What the PDF format provides
PDF stores a fixed visual rendering that can be opened, printed, searched, and archived on most computers and phones without WhatsApp. The resulting file is a transcript, not a copy of the database: it does not preserve WhatsApp's database structure, encryption, chat functions, or necessarily every attachment and message type.
How to convert CRYPT12 to PDF
Desktop method with WhatsApp Viewer
- Make a working copy of
msgstore.db.crypt12and keep the original offline. Do not rename the extension; that does not decrypt the file. - Obtain the matching WhatsApp key from the Android device or an authorized backup. Do not use a key from another device, account, or database. Android restrictions can make key extraction impossible without appropriate access.
- Download WhatsApp Viewer from a verifiable project repository and confirm that the release supports CRYPT12. It is an independent desktop utility, not an official WhatsApp product; avoid modified downloads that request a WhatsApp login, phone number, or payment to open a local backup.
- Open the database with File → Open, then provide the key when requested. Some versions require the database to be decrypted or imported before chats are displayed.
- Select a conversation and use the available export command, such as File → Export chat. Save an HTML export such as
chat.htmlwhen the version offers HTML; otherwise export text and open it in a word processor or browser. - Open the exported HTML in a browser and choose Print → Save as PDF. Set the paper size, margins, scale, and page orientation. Enable background graphics when message colors or bubbles should appear. If the export is text, use File → Export → PDF in LibreOffice Writer or the equivalent command in another desktop editor.
WhatsApp Viewer versions differ in supported database formats and export options. If the database does not open, verify the key and file pairing before trying another tool; do not repeatedly alter the original backup.
Official WhatsApp method
When key extraction is unavailable, restore the local backup through WhatsApp on an Android device using the phone number associated with the backup. Place the database in the location expected by that WhatsApp installation, reinstall or reset WhatsApp if necessary, and follow its restore prompt. WhatsApp may reject an old CRYPT12 file because of unsupported format, account, application, backup, or encryption requirements.
After restoration, open the conversation and choose More → Export chat. Choose whether to include media, open the resulting text export, and use Print → Save as PDF or File → Export → PDF. This method follows WhatsApp's supported interface but often produces a plain-text transcript rather than a chat-style layout, and WhatsApp limits the amount of content that can be exported, especially when media is included.
Online conversion and privacy
Online document converters cannot normally decrypt a CRYPT12 file because they do not have its matching WhatsApp key. Uploading the database and key to an unknown service exposes private messages, contacts, and possibly media, so direct online CRYPT12 conversion is not recommended.
After decryption and export, a non-sensitive HTML transcript can be converted online with a service such as CloudConvert or Convertio, if its current service accepts HTML input. Upload only the already-rendered transcript, review the service's retention and deletion terms, then download the PDF. For private chats, the browser's built-in PDF printer or LibreOffice keeps the conversion local.
Quality and compatibility limits
- Media is often stored outside the database. Preserve the corresponding WhatsApp media folders if photographs, videos, voice notes, stickers, or documents must be included; an export may show only filenames, placeholders, or missing items.
- Exports can omit deleted messages, reactions, unsupported message types, encryption metadata, original formatting, and some timestamps. Check sender names, dates, attachments, page breaks, and character encoding before using the PDF as a formal record.
- A PDF is usually not encrypted just because the source database was encrypted. Apply PDF password protection or store the file in an encrypted location when the transcript is sensitive.
- Never treat renaming
.crypt12to.pdf, opening it in a PDF editor, or using a generic file converter as a conversion method; those operations do not perform decryption.

Frequently asked questions
Can I convert a CRYPT12 file directly to PDF?
No, a CRYPT12 file must first be decrypted with its matching WhatsApp encryption key, then its chat data must be exported as a transcript and rendered as a PDF. Renaming the extension or treating it as an ordinary document will not work.
Will my WhatsApp messages and media all appear in the PDF?
The messages can appear in the PDF, but media files, reactions, voice notes, and other database details may be omitted or represented only as attachment names unless they are separately included during export. A PDF is a readable transcript, not a full editable copy of the WhatsApp backup.
Will a CRYPT12 to PDF conversion keep the original chats editable?
No, the result is a fixed document rather than a WhatsApp database that can be restored or edited as chats. Formatting such as timestamps, sender names, line breaks, and page layout is recreated for print, so it may not exactly match the original app.
Why does my CRYPT12 file fail to convert or show garbled text?
The usual cause is a missing, incorrect, or incompatible WhatsApp encryption key, because CRYPT12 content is encrypted rather than plain text. A damaged backup or an export process that does not support that CRYPT12 variant can cause similar failures.
