Free online XLS to ODS converter

LibreOffice Calc and other OpenDocument applications may need an ODS copy when an older workbook is stored as XLS. Conversion also provides a file suitable for sharing, editing, or archiving without requiring Microsoft Excel.

What the XLS format is

.xls is Microsoft Excel’s binary spreadsheet format, used primarily through Excel 2003. It stores worksheets, formulas, formatting, charts, images, and sometimes VBA macros in Microsoft’s BIFF (Binary Interchange File Format) structure. XLS files commonly come from older Excel installations, legacy business systems, email attachments, and archived records.

What the ODS format is

.ods is the OpenDocument Spreadsheet format supported by LibreOffice Calc, Apache OpenOffice, and other OpenDocument-compatible applications. It is a ZIP-based package containing XML spreadsheet data and related resources.

ODS uses an openly documented standard and is suitable when recipients use LibreOffice or when a spreadsheet must remain independent of a proprietary Excel format. It supports formulas, styles, charts, images, multiple sheets, filters, and named ranges, but Excel-specific features may not transfer exactly.

How to convert an XLS file

Using LibreOffice Calc

1. Open LibreOffice Calc.
2. Choose File → Open and select the .xls file.
3. Check the worksheets, formulas, merged cells, charts, images, page breaks, and print areas.
4. Choose File → Save As.
5. Select ODF Spreadsheet (.ods) as the file type, specify the output filename, and select Save.
6. If LibreOffice asks whether to retain the ODS format, select Use ODF Format.

For a local batch conversion, use LibreOffice from a terminal:

libreoffice --headless --convert-to ods --outdir output input.xls

Create output first if it does not exist. LibreOffice normally creates an ODS file with the same base name. A graphical spreadsheet application such as a compatible version of Microsoft Excel can also open the XLS file and use Save As to select OpenDocument Spreadsheet (*.ods), but LibreOffice generally provides the most direct ODS workflow.

Quality and compatibility limits

Open the resulting ODS file in Calc and verify formulas, error values, cell references, conditional formatting, data validation, charts, images, filters, pivot tables, and print layout. Functions without a direct ODS equivalent may be rewritten, calculate differently, or generate compatibility warnings.

VBA macros are not reliably converted into equivalent LibreOffice macros. They may be removed, disabled, or require manual rewriting. Excel tables, slicers, external links, advanced pivot features, form controls, and specialized chart formatting can also change. Password-protected or damaged XLS files may not convert until they are unlocked or repaired.

Keep the original XLS as a backup and compare important totals and printed pages after conversion. For audit or archival use, record the source filename, conversion software and version, conversion date, and any features that required manual correction.
