It does not seem to be possible to directly convert .xls files from MS Excel to .mpp files from MS Project, i.e. xls to mpp conversion. However, you can import some excel data (tasks) from sheet 1 of the .xls file to MS Project, using the File ► Import function found in the program.
The database currently does not contain any xls file converter.
